Amazon Kindle 2: New design and display, but more of the same
Amazon announced a new version of its Kindle e-book reader, simple named Kindle 2. (We reviewed the original Kindlelast year.) The wireless device has been redesigned with roundedcorners versus the sharp edges and wedge-like form-factor of theprevious model. Amazon says the Kindle 2 is slimmer, has more storagecapacity (2GB), longer battery life, and a faster electronic paperdisplay (16 shades of gray instead of 4). One of the things we didn'tlike about the original Kindle was how slow the pages turned, so we'reglad to see Amazon improved this shortfall. Other cool new additionsinclude text-to-speech functionality, allowing the Kindle 2 to "read" abook to you, and the ability to look up words instantly with a250,000-word dictionary built in. The Amazon 2 continues to use theawesome wireless network (via Sprint's EVDO network) that lets youdownload books really quickly, as well as Kindle versions ofnewspapers, magazines, and blogs. What we haven't seen is whetherAmazon has improved the navigation and interface (which we also didn'tlike about the first Kindle) and if there's compatibility with Amazon'sMP3 music store, since the Kindle 2 can also play MP3 files. The devicewill set you back $359, and will ship on February 24.
