Cover letters win interviews, not jobs!!!
Your cover letter enables you to present yourself (your interest, your abilities, and your suitability) in a logical and organised way.
Use your cover letter to answer important questions such as:
• Can you do the job?
• Do you have the abilities, skills, knowledge, experience and qualifications?
• Will you do the job well?
• Are you motivated, reliable and enthusiastic?
• Will you fit into the organisation?
• Do you match the company's image, values and goals?
• Will you get along well with clients and co-workers?
Many employers are very busy, so the cover letter needs to be concise
• Adapt every cover letter so it’s relevant to the employer and a particular job.
• Focus on what the employer wants to know, NOT WHAT YOU WANT FROM THEM or why you want the job. Try to convince them that you can do the job, that you’ll do a great job and that you’ll fit in and be an asset to their organisation.
• Keep your letter to no more than one page.
• Demonstrate you understand the job requirements, you have matching skills and experience and you are genuinely interested and enthusiastic about this specific opportunity.
What information will an employer gain from your cover letter?
• How well you communicate, including structure, grammar, spelling and punctuation
• Your experience, skills and qualifications
• Your level of professionalism
• Clues to your employability skills and attributes
• Your attention to detail. |
