Heatwave claims livesSoutheast Australia's record-breaking heatwave has caused the deaths of at least six Victorians and there could be more.
Victoria Police deputy commissioner Kieran Walshe said on Saturday the force had documented six cases on Friday in which they believed people had died from heat-related stress.
The temperature climbed to 45.1 degrees celsius in Melbourne on Friday afternoon, the city's second-hottest day on record.
But the death toll may be far higher.
Ambulance Victoria treated more than 150 people on Friday, and another 60 by Saturday afternoon for heat-related issues.
The heat-wave may also have contributed to the deaths of as many as 30 South Australians where the heatwave has been just as severe.
On Saturday, Melburnians enjoyed some relief as the temperature dropped below 30 degrees after three consecutive days of 43 degrees or more, but much of Victoria continued to swelter.
"Some figures that I've seen this morning indicated that there was about six deaths that are heat-related, we're not in a position to confirm that," Mr Walshe told reporters on Saturday.
"That would be the subject of a coronial investigation.
"The temperatures are still going to be up there, we would have a concern potentially more people could suffer heat-related issues that may result in fatality.
"That's why we ask the community to be vigilant, look after themselves, drink plenty of water, remain hydrated, keep cool, conserve power usage and look after your neighbours, family and friends."
Ambulance Victoria spokesman Ray Rowe said paramedics treated people with "heat stress and generally feeling poorly".
Ambulance Victoria responded to a record number of emergency calls on Friday with almost 2,000 cases across the state.
Temperatures are expected to remain high around the state until at least next weekend.
Mr Walshe said from a policing point of view, Victorians had handled the effects of the heat-wave relatively well, including the extreme temperatures and power blackouts that left 500,000 homes and businesses without electricity on Friday. Continued... |
