I have been in Australia about 9 months now. Last week, I moved to a new city - Darwin to start my master study which is my new milestone in my life. At the moment, I think it is time to write something to my friends.
24 September 2006, I took the airline to Adelaide. I was so worried about how I can make a living in Australia when I saw all people around me are western people on plane. At that time, I even cannot speak one sentence fluently. To be frank, I was a little bit afraid. I asked myself: Will I be lonely here without my family? Will my life be tough here? There are many questions and much anxiousness. After ten days, my husband and my son left from me. That hurt me so much. My heart nearly was broken then. Did I select a good option for my family? So confused!
In these nine months, I tried my best to improve my English and achieve the TAFE certificate. Fortunately, almost all that I got are distinction except the computer models which just have pass and fail grade. I ever canceled many social activities with my friends such BBQ in my teacher’s house and Christmas Concert in public garden and so on. I am very regretted to do that. As I know that should be wonderful time to enjoy. However, I really don’t have enough time to do so.
In every school holiday, I traveled to different places in Australia such as Melbourne, Darwin, Alice Spring, Katherine. I really like the place, people, government and environment here.
You can see modern and traditional things in this place. The history of aboriginal is about 20,000 years. That even is longer than Chinese history. White settlement just started 200 years ago. Nevertheless, western people have grasped and controlled this country. It is unbelievable. In addition, as you know, Australia is an immigration country. The multicultural society is so fantastic. I can learn about different culture from all over the world here. However, I have ever met pretty much culture and political conflicts. For example, many foreigners cannot believe Chinese medicine and accept the Chinese food. I tried to let them trust Chinese traditional medicine and accept Chinese food by my explanation. And before, my best friend in Adelaide who is from Taiwan didn’t admit that she is Chinese made me so sad. I nearly wanted to stop our friendship. However, now she can admit that she is Chinese after many arguments.
Most of people here are friendly and kindly. When I walked on the road of Kakadu national park alone, almost every car passing by me stopped to ask if I need help. I am so impressed by them. In the small towns of central Australia, I took three times of free picking up by car, just I asked some stranger how to get my place. And I am surprised that people here show you the way not just by pointing the direction, but also walking with you for a while. Maybe, they worried about my English is too poor to understand them.
To be frank, government here is better than many others. It supplies the guaranty of education, medicine and base living standard to every people even including rent. These social systems have a great influence which affects the people’s living styles and ideas. In addition, the Aussie environment is so good that you can see the bright stars and moon(月朗星不稀). And no worries to drink raw water! It is funny that some Aussie eats the fruit and vegetable without washing.
Here, I want to tell you an extremely interesting story in my travel. Before traveling to Kakadu national park, I booked my accommodation in advance on line. On the website, I saw one kind of accommodations which is so attractive to me, called Van Sites. The photos showed that there was a travel van with bed room, kitchen room and living room there. I really want to enjoy this special experience in travel. Furthermore, the price was so budgeted. It was only $30 per night. I booked this without any hesitate. As that time is high season of Kakadu. All hostels are busy.
After two weeks, I arrived at Kakadu and checked in. One lady gave me one key which showed site 5. When I found it, I tried to open the door of the van which is located there. I cannot open door. So I tried to open the door of bath room. Thanks! The key could work. Then I returned to reception to ask help. The receptionist told me van sites means supplying bathroom and concreted floor to settle. The van was owned by customer. My god! I have booked three days there. There is one coach per day in Kakadu. How to find a bus to come back? I looked for another hostel right away, but I couldn’t. No accommodation can supply consecutive three days. All are nearly full. I just could stay at one hostel for one night, and then changed to another one. So dangerous the situation is!
At last, I want to answer why to select Darwin which is the question of many friends. This city is quiet and beautiful. Moreover, it is the nearest city of Australia from China; I can fly back to China easily and cheaply. In these years, it developed very fast, so the labor resource may be shortage.
Anyway, once my husband gets the suitable job in Sydney, I will move again. Am I like a free bird?
