Don't dream it's over

There is freedom within
There is freedom without
Try to catch the deluge in a paper cup
There's a battle ahead
Many battles are lost
But you'll never reach the end of the road
While you're traveling with me

CHORUS:
Hey now, hey now
Don't dream it's over
Hey now, hey now
When the world comes in
They come, they come
To build a wall between us
We know they won't win

Now I'm towing my car
There's a hole in the roof
My possessions are causing me suspicion but there's no proof
In the paper today
Tales of war and of waste
But you turn right over to the TV page

CHORUS

Now I'm walking again
To the beat of a drum
And I'm counting the steps to the door of your heart
Only shadows ahead
Barely clearing the roof
Get to know the feeling of liberation and relief

CHORUS

REPEAT UNTIL FADE:
Hey now, hey now
Don't dream it's over
Hey now, hey now
When the world comes in

Dave Freeman, an advertising agency executive who co-wrote "100 Things to Do Before You Die," an adventure-seeking and often unconventional travel guide that personified the way he lived his life, has died. He was 47.

Freeman died Aug. 17 after falling and hitting his head at his home in Venice, said his father, Roy.

Published in 1999, "100 Things" was one of the first contemporary books to create a travel agenda based on 100 sites and then market it with a title that reminded mortal readers that time was limited.

The "100 Things" approach later swept the publishing industry, said Neil Teplica, who wrote the book with Freeman.

The title meant "you should live every day like it would be your last, and there's not that many people who do," Teplica told The Times. "It's a credit to Dave -- he didn't have enough days, but he lived them like he should have."

Subtitled "Travel Events You Just Can't Miss," the book grew out of the pair's now-defunct travel website, which Freeman often said was ahead of its time. Online from 1996 to 2001, it showcased festivals and events, often in a feature called "The Coolest Place on Earth Today," which became a primary source for the book.

"This life is a short journey," the authors wrote. "How can you make sure you fill it with the most fun and that you visit all the coolest places on earth before you pack those bags for the very last time?"

Freeman had visited about half the sites in the book. He preferred to travel alone because he could cover more territory, said his aunt, Barbara Freeman.

The book's listings were adventure-based, but "it wasn't just physical adventure, it was cultural adventure and spiritual adventure, such as a voodoo pilgrimage in Haiti," Teplica said.

Together, the authors had visited almost every site in the book, which included the familiar (the Academy Awards ceremony, the running of the bulls in Pamplona, Spain) as well as the more exotic (the National Hollerin' Contest in North Carolina, Australia's Nude Night Surfing contest).

One of Freeman's favorite lesser-known events was "land-diving on the tiny island in the Pacific called Vanuatu. . . . Tribesmen climb up homemade towers . . . and it's sort of like the original bungee-jumping," he said on National Public Radio in 2001.

Another favorite was Las Fallas, a festival in Valencia, Spain, that features huge papier-mâché and plaster statues that satirize local political figures and celebrities. "Secretly, they're full of fireworks and dynamite. . . . At the stroke of midnight, they light them all on fire in a huge, loud . . . pyromania display," he said on NPR.

Freeman brought an off-kilter sensibility to the book by insisting on irreverent graphic icons. He especially enjoyed the logos that stood for "potential to see blood," "dangerous," "down and dirty" and "religious fervor."

"We would try to have odd combinations of logos, such as 'gluttony' and 'Grandma approved' on the same thing," Teplica said. "The icons gave the book a lot of life, and people really reacted to the categories, which are kind of a snapshot into Dave's brain."

Critics said the graphics made the book fun to read.

David Stewart Freeman was born Feb. 21, 1961, in Whittier. His father worked in the packaging industry and his mother sold real estate.

After graduating from USC in 1983 with a bachelor's degree in urban planning, he joined an ad agency in Newport Beach.

In 1986, he moved to New York to work for Grey Advertising.

On Sept. 11, 2001, he was eating breakfast in his sixth-floor New York co-op when the first plane hit the north tower of the World Trade Center. From the roof of his building, he saw the second plane crash into the south tower, just blocks away.

Deeply affected by the terrorist attack, Freeman decided to move back to Los Angeles in 2002 to be near his family.

He joined the ad agency TBWA/Chiat/Day as the founder and director of "the disruption consultancy." His team tried to help clients look at existing accounts in new ways, his father said.

His friend Cyndi Yee called Freeman "amazingly fabulous at what he did, which was living big, but also as a business strategist and cultural anthropologist" who lectured on lifestyle trends.

According to his father, Freeman was famous for saying, " 'We're going to the future. Do you want to come along?' It always made everybody laugh."

In addition to his father and aunt, Freeman's survivors include his stepmother, Barbara, and a sister, Virginia Freeman Robb. His mother, Anne, died in 1995.

Memorial donations may be made to the children's charity Room 13 International in care of Barbara Overlie, TBWA/Chiat/Day, Dave Freeman Memorial Fund, 5353 Grosvenor Blvd., Los Angeles CA 90066.

Once again, the week before Labor day brings offbeat art lovers from around the world to Black Rock City, Nevada, for a seven-day event that immerses the senses in radical artistic self-expression. Actually, its pretty hard to describe Burning Man unless you have actually been to one, but it is certainly a far cry from the stuffy art museum atmosphere most of us are familiar with. Plus, there are enough flaming gadgets to keep any nerd entertained. Hit the jump to see some of the unique projects on display this year.

Other projects to look out for:

• I Heart Lamp by Blue Lake Iron Works by Joel 'Fatboy' Brown, Mark 'F St' Whitman, Spike Foster, Tisha 'Mortisha' Sloan: "I Heart Lamp is a super-size sculpture of grandma's living room floor lamp. More than 30 feet tall, the lamp sits on the playa as a reminder of the cushy living rooms that are the American Dream for the mainstream, but with a twist to fit other dreams. Made from a scavenged Douglas Fir pole and recycled box pipe and lumber, this lamp, besides being surrealistically large, does not contain an electric light bulb. This lamp is lit by a propane fire cannon that turns on the same way the light would… when someone pulls the chain hanging from under the lampshade almost 20 feet in the air." (It may also be an homage to the movie Anchorman. I hated the movie, but anything Steve Carell says is OK in my book.)

• PlaySoundGround by Sasha Leitman and Michael St. Clair: "laySoundGround is an adult-sized playground that is also a musical instrument. It consists of three large pieces: a merry-go-round, a slide, and a teeter-totter. These pieces are equipped with sensors that convert the motion of play into music. The installation provides an arena for chaotic improvisations, synesthetic experiences and pointless fun."

• SOL by Alex Nolan and Justin Grant: "SOL is a groundbreaking piece of kinetic art, pushing the limits of sound, vision and motion in art. The sculpture is a nearly 25' tall robot, sensing the location and motion of nearby observers to track them with a highly directional sound system. The work is powered by an array of solar panels, drawing energy the sun to fuel its sensory output."

• Tetrion by Jim Abrams: "The Tetrion is a tremendous representation of the pieces from the original Tetris game."

Dave Matthews, Kanye West, and Sheryl Crow are all performing like monkeys for VIPs in Denver this week. Also expected to be skulking around Denver this week are Ben Affleck, Josh Brolin, Annette Bening, Spike Lee, Anne Hathaway, Susan Sarandon and Charlize Theron, according to AFP. Oh, and Bruce Springsteen and Jon Bon Jovi are performing before and after Obama's acceptance speech, at that stadium! Soooo many celebrities! Because America loves its celebrities, except that it also despises and resents them.

You know how most of America's problems are caused not by the disastrous failure of government over the last like 30 years but by, uh, Tim Robbins? Yes, of course you do! So do Republicans, who learned long ago that the only thing America loved more than obsessively consuming pop culture object is loudly decrying the creators of those objects as unAmerican queers. The fact that Hollyweird (along with the music and television weird-ustries) caters directly and scientifically to every desire of every American demographic does not mean that anyone actually likes famous people, because, obviously, they are misanthropic wealthy blinkered assholes whose lives bear no resemblance to the lives of their audiences.

Which is true! They are! Just like politicians and their constituencies! Except no one knows who their Representative is, and everyone knows who Ben Affleck is. He is the Vince Vaughan who isn't funny!

And then it gets really odd, because even someone like Bruce Springsteen—who is unreservedly beloved by basically all white people older than 30—suddenly becomes a loathed example of garish flashy wealth when he sings a song for a Democrat. But, you may say, if you actually like Bruce Springsteen it is patently obvious that he has always sang bleeding heart songs about losers betrayed by their countries! But he also sings about cars which cause the Global Warming, which is a myth except when liberal celebrities have big houses, and then it is real.

So. Now Obama has to "stay away" from these famous people, except for the ones singing to him on TV, and also George Clooney has issued a press release announcing that he's never texted Barack Obama. George Clooney, in case you are unfamiliar with him, is basically the single most well-liked man in America, which is why his support for Barack Obama is the kiss of death.

Of course, if you are a Republican, you get to have the support of shitty country acts who are massively, hugely, insanely popular across the entire country except in the places where journalists live, so they don't count as "celebrities."

Get it?

LED swing is straight from a fairy tale

Here at Crave, it makes us very happy when designers write in to tell us about their creative goings-on.

The latest bit of inventor inspiration to hit the Crave in-box: the Swing Lamp by Boaz Cohen and Sayaka Yamamoto, who together make up the Netherlands-based industrial design duo BCXSY. Their 2-foot-wide LED-lit swing has an ethereal, whimsical feel as it whooshes through the dark like something out of Cirque du Soleil. It's powered by a rechargeable lithium battery.

Cohen and Yamamoto conceived of the illuminated polyethylene swing as part of a collection of products inspired by nostalgic childhood motifs.

"We came up with the idea during a brainstorm--while trying to find solutions for combining toys and furniture/home accessories," they said.

The dreamy piece is still a prototype, but the designers say they've received hundreds of requests for the product and are looking for the right producer/distributor.

Other items from their "lay!" collection include a See-Saw Bookshelf and Noisy Furniture LE, a modular furniture system whose elements attach to one another via a dual-lock re-closable fastener that makes for all sorts of Lego-like possibilities.

'Beijing Ben' Brings Olympic Glory to Seacrest, KIIS-FM

NBC co-chairman Ben Silverman delivers daily dispatches on Beijing Games for On-Air with Ryan Seacrest.
By Joel Topcik -- Broadcasting & Cable, 8/18/2008 12:44:00 PM

Beijing Ben Silverman Phones In"Oh! Fireworks! Live! On-air!! Oh, my -- Holy Cow!!!"

If you've been relying on Bob Costas or Matt Lauer or any of NBC's ubiquitous platforms for your Beijing Olympic Games coverage, then you've been missing the high-octane reportage of Ben Silverman on KIIS-FM in Los Angeles.

The voluble NBC co-chairman is on the scene in China, where he's been phoning in daily dispatches on the Olympics experience for On-Air with Ryan Seacrest.

Dubbed "Beijing Ben" by Seacrest, Silverman has treated KIIS listeners to live color commentary on the open ceremonies' pyrotechnics (see above), as well as accounts of his gastronomic adventures ("dim sum and then some") and sightseeing excursions to the Great Wall and the tomb of the Terracotta Warriors.

"The Great Wall is an understatement," Silverman reported. "It's the 'Awesome Wall!'"

The gig has produced some priceless banter between Seacrest and Silverman, who admitted that he'd been misidentifying Beijing's so-called Bird's Nest Olympic stadium.

"I've been calling it the 'Bird Cage,'" he said, "which I realize is something in West Hollywood."

Recounting some proverbs he learned from his Chinese guide, Silverman quipped, "Her name is Fun Fun, so you can imagine how much fun-fun Fun Fun is."

"I think I met her in Vegas," Seacrest replied.

After Seacrest joked Thursday that NBC has been showing promos for its new comedy Kath and Kim "every 10 minutes," things got surreal when he resumed a running game of fill-in-the-blank free association.

"I am your horse," Seacrest began, "you are my ... "

"Chariot?" Silverman replied.

"I am your Kath, you are my ... "

"Kim!"

Returning the volley, Silverman offered, "I am your warrior, you are my ... "

"Emperor!" said Seacrest, who then closed out the round with birthday wishes for Silverman (he turned 38 last week).

"You are my cake, I am your candle," he said. "Happy Birthday."

Perhaps "Seacrest Out," the host's signature catch-phrase on American Idol, will soon be eclipsed by "This is Beijing Ben Silverman signing off."

5. We have to put special emphasis on ethnic equality. Any perceived racist terms as "black athlete" or "white athlete" is not allowed. During the official telecast, we can refer to Taiwan as "Chinese Taipei". In ordinary times, refer to Taiwanese athletes as "those from the precious island Taiwan....." In case of any pro Taiwan-independence related incident inside the venue, you shall follow restrictions listed in item 1.

6. For those ethnic Chinese coaches and athletes who come back to Beijing to compete on behalf of other countries, don't play up their "patriotism" since that could backfire with their adopted countries.

7. As for the Pro-Tibetan independence and East Turkistan movements, no coverage is allowed. There's also no need to make fuss about our anti-terrorism efforts.

8. All food saftey issues, such as cancer-causing mineral water, is off-limits.

If any emergency occurs, please report to the foreign ministry.

14. If anything related to territorial dispute happens, make no fuss about it. Play down the Myanmar issue; play down the Takeshima island dispute.

15. Regarding diplomatic ties between China and certain nations, don't do interviews on your own and don't use online stories. Instead, adopt Xinhua stories only. Particularly on the Doha round negotiation, US elections, China-Iran co-operation, China-Aussie co-operation, China-Zimbabwe co-operation, China-Paraguay co-operation.

16.Be very careful with TV ratings, only use domestic body's figures. Play it down when  rating goes down.

17. In case of an emergency involving foreign tourists, please follow the official line. If there's no official line, stay away from it.

18. Re possible subway accidents in the capital, please follow the official line.

19.Be positive on security measures.

20. Be very careful with stock market coverage during the Games.

21.Properly handle coverage of the Chinese sports delegation:

A.don't criticise the selection process

B.don't overhype gold medals; don't issue predictions on gold medal numbers; don't make fuss about  cash rewards for athletes.

C.don't make a fuss about isolated misconducts by athletes.

D.enforce the publicity of our anti-doping measures.

E. put emphasis on  government efforts to secure the retirement life of atheletes.

F. keep a cool head on the Chinese performance. Be prepared for possible fluctations in the medal race.

or 注射？）

91. The time has come to make a choice.

The time has come to make achoice. The time has come to make a choice.
92. Do I make myself clear?

Do I make myself clear?，这就相当于中文的「你明白吗？」
通常Do I make myself clear?
Do I make myself clear?
93. There's no turning back.

There's no turning back.
There's no turning back.。
94. Time is always against us.

against就是「跟…… Time is always against us.
Time is always against us.

A pill that may "lock in "weight loss and allows dieters to return to normal eating without pilling on the kilos is now available, scientists claim.
Researchers say the pill,a dietary supplement called alpha-lipoic acid that is widely sold in health food shops, works in tandem with a dieting plan.
A weight loss program for six months is the first stage, followed by use of the pills, which have the added benefit of an anti-ageing effect.
But the claims have triggered a row over whether research findings made in rats apply to humans.
Malcolm Goyns, director of Immorgene Concepts, the scientific research company in england that led the research, said he was sufficiently convinced to try approach himself.
"It seems alpha-lipoic acid fools the body into behaving as if t was still on whatever diet it was following,"he said.
