Dear Investor:
Today I write not to gloat. Given the pain that nearly everyone is experiencing, that would be entirely inappropriate. Nor am I writing to make further predictions, as most of my forecasts in previous letters have unfolded or are in the process of unfolding. Instead, I am writing to say goodbye.
Recently, on the front page of Section C of the Wall Street Journal, a hedge fund manager who was also closing up shop (a $300 million fund), was quoted as saying, “What I have learned about the hedge fund business is that I hate it.” I could not agree more with that statement. I was in this game for the money. The low hanging fruit, i.e. idiots whose parents paid for prep school, Yale, and then the Harvard MBA, was there for the taking. These people who were (often) truly not worthy of the education they received (or supposedly received) rose to the top of companies such as AIG, Bear Stearns and Lehman Brothers and all levels of our government. All of this behavior supporting the Aristocracy, only ended up making it easier for me to find people stupid enough to take the other side of my trades. God bless America.
There are far too many people for me to sincerely thank for my success. However, I do not want to sound like a Hollywood actor accepting an award. The money was reward enough. Furthermore, the endless list those deserving thanks know who they are.
I will no longer manage money for other people or institutions. I have enough of my own wealth to manage. Some people, who think they have arrived at a reasonable estimate of my net worth, might be surprised that I would call it quits with such a small war chest. That is fine; I am content with my rewards. Moreover, I will let others try to amass nine, ten or eleven figure net worths. Meanwhile, their lives suck. Appointments back to back, booked solid for the next three months, they look forward to their two week vacation in January during which they will likely be glued to their Blackberries or other such devices. What is the point? They will all be forgotten in fifty years anyway. Steve Balmer, Steven Cohen, and Larry Ellison will all be forgotten. I do not understand the legacy thing. Nearly everyone will be forgotten. Give up on leaving your mark. Throw the Blackberry away and enjoy life.
So this is it. With all due respect, I am dropping out. Please do not expect any type of reply to emails or voicemails within normal time frames or at all. Andy Springer and his company will be handling the dissolution of the fund. And don’t worry about my employees, they were always employed by Mr. Springer’s company and only one (who has been well-rewarded) will lose his job.
I have no interest in any deals in which anyone would like me to participate. I truly do not have a strong opinion about any market right now, other than to say that things will continue to get worse for some time, probably years. I am content sitting on the sidelines and waiting. After all, sitting and waiting is how we made money from the subprime debacle. I now have time to repair my health, which was destroyed by the stress I layered onto myself over the past two years, as well as my entire life — where I had to compete for spaces in universities and graduate schools, jobs and assets under management — with those who had all the advantages (rich parents) that I did not. May meritocracy be part of a new form of government, which needs to be established.
On the issue of the U.S. Government, I would like to make a modest proposal. First, I point out the obvious flaws, whereby legislation was repeatedly brought forth to Congress over the past eight years, which would have reigned in the predatory lending practices of now mostly defunct institutions. These institutions regularly filled the coffers of both parties in return for voting down all of this legislation designed to protect the common citizen. This is an outrage, yet no one seems to know or care about it. Since Thomas Jefferson and Adam Smith passed, I would argue that there has been a dearth of worthy philosophers in this country, at least ones focused on improving government. Capitalism worked for two hundred years, but times change, and systems become corrupt. George Soros, a man of staggering wealth, has stated that he would like to be remembered as a philosopher. My suggestion is that this great man start and sponsor a forum for great minds to come together to create a new system of government that truly represents the common man’s interest, while at the same time creating rewards great enough to attract the best and brightest minds to serve in government roles without having to rely on corruption to further their interests or lifestyles. This forum could be similar to the one used to create the operating system, Linux, which competes with Microsoft’s near monopoly. I believe there is an answer, but for now the system is clearly broken.
Lastly, while I still have an audience, I would like to bring attention to an alternative food and energy source. You won’t see it included in BP’s, “Feel good. We are working on sustainable solutions,” television commercials, nor is it mentioned in ADM’s similar commercials. But hemp has been used for at least 5,000 years for cloth and food, as well as just about everything that is produced from petroleum products. Hemp is not marijuana and vice versa. Hemp is the male plant and it grows like a weed, hence the slang term. The original American flag was made of hemp fiber and our Constitution was printed on paper made of hemp. It was used as recently as World War II by the U.S. Government, and then promptly made illegal after the war was won. At a time when rhetoric is flying about becoming more self-sufficient in terms of energy, why is it illegal to grow this plant in this country? Ah, the female. The evil female plant — marijuana. It gets you high, it makes you laugh, it does not produce a hangover. Unlike alcohol, it does not result in bar fights or wife beating. So, why is this innocuous plant illegal? Is it a gateway drug? No, that would be alcohol, which is so heavily advertised in this country. My only conclusion as to why it is illegal, is that Corporate America, which owns Congress, would rather sell you Paxil, Zoloft, Xanax and other additive drugs, than allow you to grow a plant in your home without some of the profits going into their coffers. This policy is ludicrous. It has surely contributed to our dependency on foreign energy sources. Our policies have other countries literally laughing at our stupidity, most notably Canada, as well as several European nations (both Eastern and Western). You would not know this by paying attention to U.S. media sources though, as they tend not to elaborate on who is laughing at the United States this week. Please people, let’s stop the rhetoric and start thinking about how we can truly become self-sufficient.

With that I say good-bye and good luck.

All the best,
Andrew Lahde”

In Depth: What happens to your web stuff when you die?from TechRadar: All Latest Feeds
Technologycan do many wonderful things, but sadly it can't stop the Grim Reaper -so what happens to your web posts when you die? Will your photos, blogsand websites still be around for your grandchildren to read, or willyour online presence disappear when you do?
The law is clearenough, as Struan Robertson, Legal Director with Pinsent Masons andEditor of OUT-LAW.com explains. "You can bequeath your copyright toothers," he says. "So I can say in my will that I'm leaving all myrights in my photographs or website to a friend. If I don't do that, the copyright will belong to my estate - and in most cases it willsurvive for 70 years after my death."
Your estate may own thecopyright, but that doesn't mean your stuff will stay online. "In mostcases contracts will terminate with your death," Robertson says,"although it can depend on the terms of the contract."
Different approaches
Differentsites have different approaches. On Facebook, accounts remain activeuntil you deactivate them, and even then they're not deleted unless youspecifically ask Facebook to shut down the account.
On Flickrand other Yahoo! services your account is non-transferable and legallyspeaking should die when you do, but in reality your account willremain active provided there's occasional activity - which can be assimple as logging in from time to time. If you don't have access to thelog-in details you can't shut down somebody's photostream withoutsending Yahoo!'s legal compliance team a copy of the person's deathcertificate.
What about paid-for Flickr Pro accounts? If youaren't around to renew the subscription, your account simply reverts toa standard, free account - which means that some of your sets andhigh-res images may no longer be visible to visitors. Sets and imagesaren't deleted, though: if the account is upgraded again to a Proaccount, the 'missing' images will reappear.
Keeping your website alive
Withwebsites, things are more complicated. When you buy a domain name it'susually for a period of two years, and if you don't renew it at the endof that period it simply goes back on the virtual shelves for someoneelse to buy. Paid-for web space only stays up while the hosting billsare being paid, and free services usually close after a specifiedperiod of inactivity, typically 90 days.
That's not always thecase, though: Wordpress.com doesn't delete inactive blogs at all, although it may change that policy due to the ongoing problem of blogsbeing hijacked by spammers and other undesirables.
According toForbes magazine, if you're serious about keeping your online presencegoing you should appoint an executor, somebody who'll handle youraffairs when you're gone. Leave him or her your logins and other keyinformation, and if there's stuff you'd rather the family didn't seeyou can arrange for the executor to delete specific content from yourcomputer or online accounts.
You don't have to do it in a will ifyou don't want to; an envelope marked "to be opened in the event of mydeath" is just as effective, provided of course your executor can findit. Think about money, too: if it's possible to pay for hosting ordomains for a long period then do so; if it isn't, make sure you leaveinstructions and cash to cover the bills.
If all else fails, there's always the Internet Archive. It won't archive your Flickr picsor password-protected content, but it does a decent job of archivingpublicly available web pages. If your site isn't already in the index, you can add it via Alexa.
We might not live forever, but some of our web pages may.

7 Spectacularly Skilled High-Speed PhotographersWritten by Delana on October 9th, 2008 - Topics: Street Art,  Travel,  Urban Art,  Various

High-speed photography is a fascinating way to capture the imagesthat we don’t often get to see. So many amazing things happen in theblink of an eye - moving too quickly for us to see more than a blur andthe aftermath. Using clever equipment and quick shutters, thesetalented photographers freeze time and illuminate one single criticalmoment. If they time it just right, high-speed photographers can catcha moment of impact, explosion, or surprising movement - and it makes for incredible art.

(images via: Stefan)Stefan’s high-speed photographs combine the sophistication of fineart and the fun of watching stuff explode. The brave hand model withbright red fingernails in many of his pictures holds items which arethen shot with a gun. The resulting images are not only beautiful, butfascinating - not to mention a little dangerous.

(images via: Martin Waugh)The liquid sculptures of Martin Waugh are amazingly intricate andoften involve surprising shapes. Although he admits that liquids aredifficult to control, Martin Waugh seems to have a knack for capturingthe perfect moment. His images are created with high-speed flashphotography and cleaned up - but not altered - in Photoshop. Thecombination of movement, color and organic shapes makes these imagesunforgettable. Martin Waugh kindly shares his techniques on his blog, and he also sells prints of his work.

(images via: Universität Wien)These images from Peter Wienerroither of light bulbs shattering andburning show just how much detail can be captured with high-speedphotography. Each tiny bit of glass is illuminated and frozen inmid-air - and you can almost hear the sound of shattering glass.

(images via: Boris Bos)The high-speed photography of Boris Bos uses the simple but elegantcombination of apples and water. The moment of impact is captured, withevery drop of water taking on its own graceful shape as it leaps intothe air.

(images via: Jasper Nance)Jasper Nance is, without a doubt, one of the best high-speedphotographers to ever fire a gun. Her creative and innovative imagesare captured using a homemade high-speed flash, which is itself a work of art. Many of her photographs involve itemsbeing shot with various types of guns; she then captures the resultingexplosions, splatters, and crazy airborne patterns made by the guts ofthe fired-upon object. Her photos look like research or scientificexperiments, but she’s in it for the art - and the fun.

(images via: Hannoc)Hannoc’s unique photos explore what happens to balloons when theyare pierced or shot. Freezing the exact moment of breakage provides afascinating picture of the balloon literally peeling away from itscontents, which for that split second remain in place as though stillheld by the balloon.

(images via: Johnny Chung Lee)Johnny Chung Lee is an all-around phenomenal photographer. His loveof photography shows through in every image he produces, whether it’s aportrait, a still life, or an exploding beer bottle. These playfulhigh-speed images beautifully show off Johnny Chung Lee’s skill, whileall of the photos on his website prove his versatility.

Victoria and David Beckham's secret to perfect glowing skin: Bird poo

Nobody likes falling victim to birds' mess dropping on them from above - even though it is supposed to bring good luck.
But for Victoria and David Beckham it is more a case of bird poo bringing them a good look, rather than good luck.
Victoria, who has long battled problem skin, puts her new clear complexion downto a bizarre new beauty regime involving bird poo.
And it seems David has been getting involved too.

Victoria and David Beckham owe their clear complexions to using a paste made from nightingale droppings

It has emerged that the stylish couple have been indulging in beauty treatments to improve their skin.

Victoria,34, has been regularly indulging in £100 Geisha Facials, using a pastemade from nightingale droppings, to combat acne she has suffered sinceher teens.

A pal told Closer magazine:'When Victoria was in Japan recently she was admiring the local women’sclear skin and discovered it was down to these facials.

'She was intrigued and when she got back to the US she found that some New York beauty salons now offer the treatment.

'She tried it and loved how great her skin looked. She also uses a cream derived from nightingale poo at home.'

The facial used by Posh contains nightingale droppings. A full version of this story appears in Closer magazine

提几点建议：
1.时态要统一。
2.断句要及时，一句话只能有一个主语，如果是连续的几个动作，主语应该放在第一个动作之前。如Then standed up ,he drewed his pants up and started running again. 应为：Then he stood up,  pulled up his pants and started to run again.
3.动词+介词的组合平时要注意积累。比如ran at them，并无这种用法，容易使人迷惑。
4.一些小细节要注意，比如拼写和冠词的使用，etc。
希望对lz有帮助。

Spending on China's credit cardfrom BBC NEWS | James Reynolds' China by James Reynolds  (BBC News)
Nationalholidays this week in China (1 October is the anniversary of the 1949revolution which brought the Communist Party to power).
The holidays mean that the Shanghai stock exchange is closed. So, we won't know how the markets here will react to the US non-bail-outtill the exchange opens again on 5 October. But this country is keepinga close eye on the financial crisis currently hacking its way throughthe United States and Europe.
Asit stands right now, the first wave of this crisis doesn't appear tohave hit China too badly. Chinese banks didn't get hugely involved insub-prime mortgages. Reports say that this country's financialinstitutions have stacked up about 4.3 billion dollars in losses (outof more than $500bn worldwide).
But, in the longer term, the crisis is bound to affect China muchmore directly. One simple reason explains it: if the world's biggestconsumer, the United States, can no longer afford to buy as much, Chinawill no longer be able to sell as much.
That's important, because China's recent growth is based on itsexports and on its engagement with the world - the United States inparticular. If the world scales down what it can buy, that will have ahuge impact here.
If people in Pennsylvania can't afford new DVD players or newmicrowave ovens, manufacturers in China will have fewer people to sellto and may have to shut down. The downturn in the States has alreadyaffected businesses in Shenzhen in southern China which would normallyexport in bulk to the US.
And there's another, crucial way in which China and the US arelocked together. In simple terms, America's been having a great timespending on China's credit card. Consumers in the US have been able tobuy homes, cars and occasional yachts partly because China's beenwilling to invest its own savings in US debt.
The background: China has huge amounts of foreign exchange reserves- or what you or I would call savings. China didn't want to keep all ofit under a mattress, so it scouted around for a place to keep it safe.It chose US Treasury bonds - low yield, but low risk - based on thebelief that the US economy is its safest long-term bet. So far, Chinahas invested several hundred billion dollars in these bonds.
Butnow - because of the financial crisis - America's having to look prettyclosely at its spending. And it's uneasy with the fact that so much ofits buying has been financed by a country which may become its greatestglobal rival. The subject was mentioned by both presidential candidatesduring their first debate...
"One of the major reasons why we're in the difficulties we are intoday is because spending got out of control. We owe China $500bn." -Senator John McCain.
"We've got challenges, for example, with China, where we areborrowing billions of dollars. They now hold a trillion dollars' worthof our debt." - Senator Barack Obama.
(It may be slightly worrying to find that the two men differ by$500bn as to how much the US owes China - one would imagine thatChina's keeping a slightly more accurate count of its money.)
I haven't come across any suggestion at the moment that China willstop investing its savings in the US economy. But here's a question forthe future - what happens if China decides to invest its moneysomewhere else?
PS. I'll be away during October. Please have a look at our Asia-Pacific index for news about China. See you back here in November!

Clay Aiken comes out of the closet

Clay Aiken appears on the cover of the latest People magazine holding his infant son, Parker Foster Aiken, with the headline: "Yes, I'm Gay."
The 29-year-old former American Idolrunner-up, multi-platinum recording artist and Broadway star creditshis son, conceived by in-vitro fertilisation with friend and producerJaymes Foster, with making him realise that he could no longer hide hishomosexuality from the world.
"It was the first decision I madeas a father," Aiken told the magazine, which arrives on US newsstandson Friday. "I cannot raise a child to lie or to hide things. I wasn'traised that way, and I'm not going to raise a child to do that."
Aiken, who rose to fame on Idolin 2003, has long been the subject of rumours and tabloid fodder thathe was gay, but usually refused to acknowledge them. In an interviewwith The Associated Press two years ago, he said of the talk: "I don'treally feel like I have anybody to answer to but myself and God and thepeople I love."
Aiken said he only told his family that he wasgay four years ago. He recalled a tearful discussion with his mother ina car after dropping off his brother, who was being sent to Iraq, at amilitary base.
"It was dark. I was sitting there, thinking tomyself. I don't know why I started thinking about it ... I just startedbawling. She made me pull over the car and it just came out," he said."She started crying. She was obviously somewhat stunned. But she wasvery supportive and very comforting."
Aiken said his mother "still struggles with things quite a bit, but she's come a long way."
Themagazine cover features Aiken holding his son, who was born in August. The baby's mother is Aiken's record producer, whom he met whileperforming on Idol.
Aiken, who considers himself a born-againChristian, said he knows he may turn off some fans - known as Claymates- with his admission and his decision to have a child outsidetraditional marriage.
"I've never intended to lie to anybody at all," he said. "But if they leave, I don't want them to leave hating me."
Gay groups applauded Aiken's public admission.
"Wecongratulate Clay for making this decision and for setting an examplefor others and his family," said Neil Giuliano, president of the Gay& Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation. "As we're seeing, more andmore gay people, including celebrities, are living openly and honestly, and this has tremendous impact in terms of creating awareness, understanding and acceptance."
Aiken recently released the CD On My Way Here. He made his Broadway debut this (northern) spring in Monty Python's Spamalot.

There is a big difference between being religious and being a Christian. Religiouspeople judge because deep down they don't want to worship God..they want to be God.Christians don't feel that it is their right to judge another person.                                         Fluffyfox                                                 (26/09/2008 9:45:20 AM) |                                                Mark As Inappropriate

What is the point of him being a Christian if he isn't even following some of themost basic things the bible teaches? If you call yourself a Christian and go do stuffthat the bible says is wrong, then you're just making a joke of Christianity.                                         kal                                                 (26/09/2008 8:45:06 AM) |                                                Mark As Inappropriate

You most certainly can be gay and a Christian. The only problem is that (likesomeone mentioned below) the Bible teaches that homosexuality is a big no-no and we shouldbe trying to live our lives according to "the rules".                                        Hey Sarah....                                                 (26/09/2008 7:14:49 AM) |                                                Mark As Inappropriate

anyway, it is better to say something than just smiling or say nothing......sometimes, i just respond as smiling, quite often, they will keep saying " thank you" untill I say something......sometimes, you could respond as surprising  "why?" for joking during your work....

Nobel prize for dissident?from BBC NEWS | James Reynolds' China by James Reynolds  (BBC News)
Is it possible that a skinny young man sitting in a Chinese jail will win the 2008 Nobel Peace Prize?
There's speculation that the Chinese activist Hu Jia - who'scurrently serving a three and a half year jail sentence - might beawarded this year's prize.
HuJia, who's 35, is already one of China's most prominentactivist/dissidents. He's campaigned for the environment, fordemocracy, and for the rights of people with HIV and Aids. TheCommunist Party objected to his activism. In April this year, a Beijingcourt found him guilty of "inciting subversion of state power".
I met Hu Jia a couple of times before he was jailed. The first timewas a year ago at the small Beijing apartment he shares with his wife,Zeng Jinyan, who's also an activist.
Hu Jia was a slight, shy figure. His wife - who speaks good English- was more talkative. Their apartment was cluttered with boxes, DVDs(including a few series of Friends) and baby stuff - Zeng Jinyan wasseven months pregnant with their first child. At the time, Hu Jia wasunder house arrest - police officers even slept on the floor rightoutside the front door to make sure he didn't escape. He was onlyallowed out of the house to accompany his wife for doctors' visits(followed by the police, of course).
A couple of months later, the couple went to hospital for the birthof their daughter, called Qianci. My colleagues and I filmed them inhospital as they got ready to check out and go back home. Hu Jia spentmost of his time filming his wife and daughter with his ownhi-definition video camera. Plain clothes police officers stood in thehospital parking lot, keeping an eye on the couple and their baby. Theofficers managed to miss Hu Jia when he went from one part of thehospital to another - they ran after him in a slight panic when theyrealised he was out of their sight.
At the end of 2007, Hu Jia was formally detained. We tried to go andinterview his wife at their apartment - but we were stopped byuniformed officers and taken to a nearby police post for our details tobe taken down. Then, in April, Hu Jia was tried and sentenced.
We haven't been able to interview Zeng Jinyan since the day herhusband was sentenced - the authorities still stop people from going tovisit her. But she does keep up a blog in Chinese.
To the Communist Party, the couple are annoying opponents whodeliberately break the law and try to embarrass the country. It's hardto tell what ordinary Chinese people make of Hu Jia and Zeng Jinyanbecause their activism is barely reported here.
This year's Nobel Peace Prize winner will be announced on Friday 10 October.

Keeping the faithfrom BBC NEWS | James Reynolds' China by James Reynolds  (BBC News)
Milkpowder tainted with an industrial chemical - just a year after leadpaint was found in children's toys, and poison was discovered in petfood and toothpaste. So how do people feel about a government that hasagain failed in its promise to keep products safe?
"Ithink the government is doing a good job so far," says Dong Zhen Shengwho took his two year-old daughter to hospital be checked for kidneystones, "After news of the scandal was broken by the media, thegovernment reacted quite quickly. And they've allowed us to have freehospital checks for our children."
For all the parents' anger then, you still come across a bedrockfaith in this country's top leaders - and in their ability to makethings right. As I've written here before, this faith dates back to the time of the emperors.Traditionally, when things go wrong in China, you blame corruptlower-level officials, and you look to a benevolent leader in thecapital to come to the rescue.
So, in recent days, Chinese state TV has followed this ancient modelclosely. It's reported openly on the failure of lower-level officials -the resignation of the chief quality regulator and the sacking of anumber of provincial officials. And it's shown the benevolent leadercoming in to make things right - in this case, the Premier Wen Jiabaovisiting hospitals and promising to reform the dairy industry.
Mr Wen represents a system that's built on trust not scepticism - onthe belief that you should put your faith in wise leaders to keep yousafe. In this system - inherited from imperial times - there's no roomfor any meaningful checks and balances.
The Party doesn't allow the establishment of an independent legalsystem, a free press, or strong NGOs - the kind of tools that othercountries use to keep their officials honest and their food safe. Ifyou dare to challenge the Party in China, your life can get prettydifficult.
A few days ago, in south Beijing, several hundred neighbours decidedto break the law. They went to protest against the presence of arubbish dump near their homes. The police marched next to them. Twoofficers with white gloves raised banners printed with the words "DoNot Violate Public Order."
"They feel furious - more than angry," one protestor told me (he declined to give me his name).
"Do you hope the government will listen and do something?" I asked.
"I don't think so - unless somebody dies. As you can see with themilk problem, that's the philosophy and without any necessarymonitoring from any third party I don't think the government will doanything to curb the feeling that people generate."
After a couple of hours the protestors went home. A little later, anumber of them were detained by the police. This is what happens inChina when you try to challenge the Party's authority - when you try tosuggest that there should be more independent regulation and oversight. But this week, the irony of how China is run may be pretty clear. You're still meant to trust the Party even if you can no longer trustthe food it allows you to buy in the shops.
