In the last century, the first man to walk on the moon said it was "a giant leap for mankind”. However, some people think it has made little difference to our daily lives.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Some people think that spending astronomical amount of money on space programs is not worthwhile since it does not help improve our daily lives. I partly agree with that.

People who are against space programs think that sending a man to the moon is meaningless and money-wasting. They argue that such kind of achievement has not changed most people’s lives and we have not benefited from it in terms of our standard of living, health, etc. In fact, the colossal amount of money spent can be better used in areas which are closely related with our lives. For example, there are great disparities between the rural and urban development as well as the east and west regions’ development in China. By investing more money to the less developed areas, our country can be more balanced in terms of economic development, making it more stable and harmonious. In my perspective, money should always be channeled to more pressing issues first.

On the other hand, putting a man on the moon was a huge achievement that inspires and interests people today. It showed us that we can achieve anything we put our minds on and this is the great driving force needed in any scientific researches. Also, the fact that the space programs have not benefited the world in a large extent now does not mean that it will not in the future. Instead of stopping funding the programs and giving them up, what we need to do is to balance the money spent on space programs and on practical issues on earth.

In conclusion, even though putting a man on the moon might not have had a direct effect on our daily lives, it was an encouraging achievement.
