Former prime minister Paul Keating has lashed out at his predecessor Bob Hawke over a biography that he says rewrites history. Mr Keating accuses Mr Hawke of going missing during the 1990s, saying he had to carry the Prime Minister because of Mr Hawke's depression. Mr Keating says the book is unfair, unreasonable and grasping.

The Prime Minister is preparing to make her first major speech on the economy today after revelations she conceded billions in revenue as part of the mining deal. Treasury figures released yesterday show the final tax take will now be 7.5 billion dollars less than anticipated over the first two years of the new tax.

Fifteen wharves around Australia remain closed this morning because of an industrial action. The Maritime Union of Australia called the 24-hour strike, following the death of a third worker on the docks in five months. The worker died at Appleton Dock in Melbourne. Work is expected to resume in all 15 wharves(口误) this afternoon.

Australia's Acting High Commissioner to Fiji has arrived in Melbourne last night after being expelled from the Pacific island country. Sarah Roberts was ordered out on Monday after Fiji accused Australia of trying to discredit its interim government.

The US Senate has passed that landmark bill to overhaul the US financial system. The bill was passed by the House of Representatives early this month. The reform is meant to reduce risk taking by banks and prevent repeats of the 2008 global financial crisis.

Julia Gillard will make her first visit to Tasmania today as Prime Minister. She'll be hoping to shift the focus away from questions about the role she played in the dumping of Kevin Rudd. While an election date has yet to be set, the Prime Minister has agreed to three debates with the Opposition leader Tony Abbott during the election campaign.

Worshippers have been killed after suspected suicide bombers struck a mosque in southeastern Iran. Two blasts hit the Shiite mosque in the city of Zahedan in an area that's home to a mostly Sunni population. Medical officials have put the death toll at 20 people with more than 100 injured.

The Vatican has tightened its procedures for dealing with child sex abuse by priests. The time allowed for victims to bring complaints has been doubled to 20 years. The new rules also declare possession of child porn by a priest a crime under Church law as well as under civil law.

And a Perth butcher says he'll continue to sell horse meat despite receiving death threats. Vince Garreffa started selling the meat this week after getting the green light from the state's Food and Agriculture Minister.

Goldman Sachs will pay a $600 million fine to settle a fraud case. The US financial regulator imposed the penalty on the bank for misleading investors about a hedge fund that was destined to fail. The Securities and Exchange Commission says the penalty is the biggest they've handed out. It comes as the US Senate passes new laws to overhaul the country's financial sector. The reform's the biggest since the Great Depression and aimed to prevent a repeat of the subprime mortgage crisis.

National Australia Bank's prolonged bid to take over AXA Asia Pacific is set to drag on even longer. The period of exclusive talks between NAB, AXA Asia Pacific and its parent company AXA SA has expired, but NAB is trying to extend negotiations on the $13.3 billion bid.

To the markets now, and a mixed bag of US economic data overnight contributed to a fall on Wall Street that’s left Australian shares in the red. The All Ords and the ASX 200 are down about 0.5 percent at close. The mining sector led the losses. AXA also lost almost 2 percent. Elsewhere in the region, Japan's Nikkei has shed almost 3 percent.

And checking the currency markets, the local dollar is fairly flat. It's buying 87.6 US cents.

The first Newspoll of the federal election campaign shows the ALP has a commanding lead over the Coalition. Today's poll puts Labor 10 points ahead on the two-party preferred basis. Labor's primary vote stays steady at 42 per cent while the Coalition has dropped two points to 38 (per cent).

Tony Abbott'll head to Julia Gillard’s hometown of Melbourne this morning for the second full day on the hustings. Ms Gillard is due to leave Brisbane after efforts to shore up votes in the home state of former prime minister Kevin Rudd. With the election a little more than a month away, Australians have until 8 pm tonight to enrol to vote.

The Queensland Government says it will strongly oppose Jayant Patel'sappeal against his convictions and sentence. Lawyers for the Bundaberg surgeon last week lodged the appeal against his seven-year jail term. Patel was found guilty of three counts of manslaughter and one of grievous bodily harm.

Victoria's former police chief Christine Nixon'll undergo surgery today, after being rushed to hospital at the weekend. It's understood she's suffering from gall bladder problems. She was hospitalized a day after resigning from her position as head of Victoria's Bushfire Reconstruction and Recovery Authority. Ms Nixon has been criticized for announcing her resignation just hours after the federal election was called.

And the number of people killed in a suicide bombing in central Iraq has risen to 45. Another four people were killed in a separate Baghdad blast. In the worst attack, police say the bomber targeted members of the government-backed Sunni militia who were lining up to be paid.

And a man wearing red Speedos who confronted Tony Abbott in Melbourne yesterday has been exposed as a Labor campaign officer. Conrad French works in the ALP head office in Victoria with the state secretary and campaign director Nicholas Reece. It had been thought the man of the budgie smuggling stunts was a disgruntled voter.

The federal election debate between the Prime Minister and the Opposition Leader is likely to clash with the finale of popular TV show MasterChef. Julia Gillard has indicated there'll be only one campaign debate between her and Tony Abbott and it's likely to be this Sunday.

The Melbourne Storm’s former acting CEO says senior News Limited executives knew about salary cap breaches two months before they became public. Matt Hanson has told The Age newspaper executives were told of the breaches as early as February, but did nothing to address them.

A ceremony has been held in northern France to mark the reburial of 250 Australian and British soldiers killed in World War I. The soldiers were killed in the Battle of Fromelles more than 90 years ago. Their bodies had been buried in mass graves until they were discovered a couple of years ago. They are about being reinterred with full military honors.

And police are investigating the murder of a Greek journalist who was shot more than 15 times outside his Athens home. It's believed Sokratis Giolias was about to publish the results of an investigation into corruption.

我听写也要花很长时间，而且错误很多。不过慢慢练习熟悉口音就是了，还有一步是自己翻译为中文，然后对照口译为英文.... 我没时间去做了。

And Julia Gillard has launched a fresh attack on Tony Abbott's industrial relations policy. Speaking at a union function in Melbourne overnight, she said Mr Abbott remained a strong advocate for stripping workers of their rights. But Mr Abbott yesterday ruled out changes to the unfair dismissal laws if the Coalition wins Government.

The Greens meanwhile are calling for a levy on junk food and alcohol advertising. The Greens leader Bob Brown said the advertisers could choose between including health information in their advertising or paying that levy.

Pakistani immigration officials say the Federal Government’s freeze on processing Afghan asylum applications has not reduced the number of Afghans trying to reach Australia. Pakistan’s Federal Investigation Agency director has told the ABC that Afghanis continue to travel through his country hoping to reach Australia. Pakistan wants permission to interrogate Christmas Island detaineeks to help break people smuggling rings in Pakistan.

Britain's Prime Minister David Cameron has rebuffed a US request for an inquiry into the release of the Lockerbie bomber. Mr Cameron rejected the idea while meeting with President Barack Obama in Washington. Mr Obama says the Scottish government's decision to release Abdelbaset al-Megrahi was a bad one.

And Qantas says a strike at Sydney Airport today will not have a major effect on domestic and international flights. It's expected some domestic flights to Adelaide, Cairns, Darwin and Perth will be disrupted.

The Federal Opposition says the Prime Minister must admit the Government's border protection policies are failing. Two boats carrying almost 90 people have arrived at Christmas Island over the past 24 hours. Prime Minister Julia Gillard insists she will pursue the establishment of a regional processing centre.

The union representing Telstra employees says it hopes cuts to senior management will open up jobs on the frontline. Three hundred Telstra senior managers are due to be laid off in coming weeks. Thirty senior executives were made redundant last night.

AFL footballer Jason Akermanis says he feels gutted about the Western Bulldogs' decision to sack him. The club ended its contract with Akermanis yesterday saying he breached the trust of his teammates too many times. In today's Herald Sun newspaper Akermanis writes he feels stripped of everything he thought was important to a football club.

A CSIRO researcher has called on developed countries to limit the amount of food they throw away to help feed the world's growing population. Dr John Passioura says 30 per cent of world food production is wasted. He says the waste is mainly food that doesn't meet quality or cosmetic specifications.

And the Queensland Cancer Council wants the State Government to ban smoking in cars carrying children up to the age of 18. Currently the law bans smoking in cars with passengers 16 or younger.

The Federal Opposition has accused the Government of showing contempt for Australia's national security. The ABC's been told the former prime minister Kevin Rudd sent his 31-year-old chief of staff to stand in for him at National Security Committee meetings of Cabinet. The Federal Government has denied the allegations.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard will release Labor's climate change policy in Brisbane today. The revised plan will include investment in renewable technology and energy efficiency measures. The policy will include plans for a panel to find out the community’s attitude to putting a price on carbon.

The far-right British National Party leader Nick Griffin has been barred from a Buckingham Palace garden party. A Palace official said the leader was denied entry because he overtly used his personal invitation for political purposes through the media. Mr Griffin said the decision was an absolute scandal.

The International Court of Justice has ruled Kosovo's 2008 declaration of independence from Serbia did not violate international law. It's the first time an independent body has legitimised Kosovo's self-declared independence. The decision could lead to more countries recognising Kosovo's independence.

And a storm brewing near Florida's coast is threatening the oil spill clean-up in the Gulf of Mexico. Weather authorities say a tropical depression with strong winds is expected to move towards Florida in the next 36 hours. More than 750 boats involved in the clean-up could be recalled if the conditions worsen.

Regulators in the European Union say a stress test of 91 banks across the EU has found that the sector is in good financial health. The study measured the banks’ capacity to survive a severe recession or another sovereign debt crisis. And all the major players passed, seven banks failed the test. But the European Central Bank says it proves that the EU financial sector is stronger than many people thought.

The Food and Grocery Council is calling on the Government to consider the impact its climate change policies could have on industry. The Prime Minister Julia Gillard has announced that if re-elected, she’ll set up a citizens’ assembly that would gauge community support for putting a price on carbon. The Grocery Council says industry needs to be involved because a carbon price on food production could mean local producers are unable to compete with foreign suppliers.

To the market numbers, and Wall Street closed higher on news that the major European banks passed the stress tests. The Dow finished up nearly 1 per cent. To Europe, and London's FTSE was fairly flat but Germany's DAX put on 24 points.

And checking currencies, the Australian dollar is stronger, buying 89 US cents.

And last night's Leaders Debate failed to produce a clear winner as both leaders stuck carefully to their campaign scripts. Julia Gillard tried to focus on industrial relations and creating an open dialogue on climate change. The Opposition leader Tony Abbott tried to push his paid parental leave scheme and maintained the Coalition's attack on Labor's border protection policy.

And Election 2010 is shaping up to be a close race according to two polls out today. In the Newspoll, Labor's two-party preferred rating dropped from a 10-point lead to a four-point lead, and dissatisfaction with Ms Gillard rose 8 per cent to 37 per cent. But both polls show Labor still with an election winning lead.

The embattled BP chief Tony Hayward is expected to announce that he is stepping down from the top job. Mr Hayward was widely criticized in the wake of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill. He's believed to be negotiating the terms of his exit, and the announcement is expected in the next 24 hours.

In Thailand, one person has been killed in an explosion near the site of a recent anti-government protest in Bangkok. Nine other people were injured in that explosion at a bus stop.

And a Queensland bank manager who disappeared during an investigation into missing money at his branch has been found and charged. Bendigo Bank manager Colin Carleton vanished when an investigation into his Atherton branch found three million dollars missing. He was found camping at Cape Tribulation, north of Cairns yesterday.

The White House says the leaking of confidential military documents poses a threat to national security. Those documents published on whistleblower site Wikileaks suggest Pakistani authorities helped the Taliban plan attacks on NATO. Pakistan's rejected claims that its intelligence services actively supported Taliban militants in Afghanistan.

The Federal Opposition will hold talks with Nauru today about housing asylum seekers on the island. Deputy leader Julie Bishop and immigration spokesman Scott Morrison will meet Nauru's Foreign Minister Kieren Keke in Brisbane. The Coalition wants to reopen Nauru's processing centre which was set up by the Howard government. Prime Minister Julia Gillard maintains her preferred option is East Timor.

Australia's international education sector says cuts to student visa numbers could cost thousands of jobs. The Government’s promised to tighten rules for overseas student visas. The International Education Association predicts 100,000 fewer overseas students next year will mean 25,000 fewer jobs.

Police are still searching for a suspected armed robber involved in a fatal shooting on Sydney's northern beaches. Police will review CCTV footage still (to) determine the circumstances of yesterday's attempted holdup outside the Dee Why RSL Club. Two men tried to rob the van and one was shot fatally in the chest.

Leading the news this morning:

The Gillard Government's been rocked by more damaging internal leaks. Last night, Channel Nine reported that Julia Gillard lobbied in Cabinet against the Government's paid parental leave scheme and the size of pension increases. Ms Gillard says she doesn't respond to anonymous allegations, but some of her colleagues are pointing the finger of blame at Kevin Rudd as the source. The former prime minister says he never comments on Cabinet talks.

The United Nations chief weapons inspector Hans Blix says he believes the war in Iraq was illegal. Dr Blix made the statement while giving evidence at the UK inquiry into the war.

The man who's due to become the new chief of BP says the company will emerge from the oil spill, smaller and wiser. Bob Dudley is in charge of the clean-up and he will replace Tony Hayward in October.

(A) 14-year-old Dutch girl has won a legal battle to try to become the youngest person to sail solo around the world. A Netherlands court lifted a child protection order after it found Laura Dekker had improved her preparations. The young sailor must complete the trip before she turns 17 in September 2012 to break the record.

And health officials say there's strong evidence to suggest the number of women who have contracted hepatitis C from a Melbourne doctor has now risen to 35. The link between the Croydon Day Surgery and the cluster was first revealed in April when there were 12 cases. A lawyer bringing a class action over the outbreak.

The Opposition says the information leaks that have plagued the Government are a sign of chaos at the top. Opposition finance spokesman Andrew Robb has seized on Treasurer Wayne Swan's admission the Government can't stop the leaks.

“We can't control leaks and I certainly can't predict where they are coming from.”

Prime Minister Julia Gillard and Opposition leader Tony Abbott are both campaigning in Melbourne today.

Indonesia's Supreme Court has recommended that Schapelle Corby's jail sentence be slashed. The 33-year-old Australian serving a 20-year sentence in Bali for drug smuggling is seeking clemency from the Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. In a submission to the president, a judge has suggested a reduction in that term. A decision is yet to be made.

Greek fuel-tanker drivers have been protesting after the government used a rare emergency law to force them back to work after strike action threatened tourism and caused food shortages. A wave of industrial action since new austerity measures were introduced cut tourist arrivals by 5 per cent the first quarter of the year.

And former US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has joined the Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin in a rare duet to raise money for charity. The classically trained Dr Rice played piano while Ms Franklin sang the hit song “I Say a Little Prayer”.

Leading the news this morning:

More than 300,000 extra premises will be connected to the National Broadband Network than originally planned. NBN coverage maps to be unveiled today by the Federal Government show the network will provide fibre optic coverage to 93 per cent of residences. That's up from its original estimate of 90 per cent.

The former Labor leader Mark Latham believes Kevin Rudd is behind the Cabinet leaks that have undermined Julia Gillard's election campaign. This week it was reported that Ms Gillard argued against the paid parental leave scheme and a raise in the age pension. When fingers pointed to Mr Rudd as a source of the leak, Ms Gillard and Treasurer Wayne Swan defended him.

A three-million-dollar compensation payment to the family of an Aboriginal elder who died in custody has been described as inadequate. The 47-year-old man, known as Mr Ward died from heatstroke while being transported in the back of a prison van in Western Australia. The Deaths in Custody Watch Committee says it will continue to push for criminal action.

In Pakistan, floods caused by heavy monsoon rains have killed at least 100 people. Dozens of people drowned in the worst affected areas in the country's northwest. Others were electrocuted or buried under the rubble of collapsed buildings.

And a woman has confessed to suffocating eight newborn children and hiding their bodies in a village in France. The bodies were found wrapped in plastic bags at two homes near the northern city

The US President Barack Obama has welcomed the latest economic growth figures, but he says more action is needed to get unemployed Americans back to work. The US economy grew 2.4 percent in the second quarter of this year, but that's a slower pace than the previous three months. President Obama has toured car factories in Detroit, claiming his administration's bailout of the industry has saved one million jobs.

The head of Coles says he doesn't think the Coalition's paid parental leave scheme would push prices up for consumers. The government has argued the 1.7% levy on large businesses would be passed on to consumers, but the Managing Director of Coles, Ian McLeod, says the levy wouldn't have a major impact.

A senior official in Beijing says that China has overtaken Japan to become the second biggest economy in the world. China's chief currency regulator made the claim on a government website although he gave no new figures to support it.

And to the market numbers, Wall Street finished the session fairly flat. The Dow Jones closed just one point lower. There were mixed results in Europe. London's FTSE finished more than one percent weaker, but the DAX made modest gains.

And checking currencies, the Australian dollar is buying around 90 US cents.

At least five people have been killed in clashes on the border between Israel and Lebanon. Three Lebanese soldiers, a senior Israeli officer and a Lebanese journalist were killed in exchange. Lebanese forces say they opened fire after Israeli soldiers crossed the border to remove a tree that was blocking their surveillance. Israel denies making the crossing.

Police suspended a third night doorknocking homes in the western Sydney suburb of Hebersham, where a six-year-old girl went missing. Kiesha Abrahams was reported missing on Sunday morning. Her mother said she last saw her daughter in their Hebersham home on Saturday night. The search will resume at later this morning.

The tobacco industry has begun a fightback against the Government's plan for plain cigarette packets. The Alliance of Australian Retailers says it represents over 19,000 shopkeepers. It will begin an advertising campaign from tomorrow.

Fresh rain is hampering rescue efforts in Pakistan where more than 1,400 people have been killed in floods. Rising waters have washed away roads and entire villages in the country’s northwest. Rescue teams are struggling to reach almost 30,000 people cut off by the floods.

And a worker at a beer distribution firm in the United States has shot dead eight colleagues before turning the gun on himself. At least two people were also injured. There are reports the man, who was a driver of the company, had been due to face a disciplinary hearing for theft.

In other news this morning:

New South Wales police will today decide just how to continue the search for missing six-year-old Kiesha Abrahams. Last night, nearly 200 people held a candle-lit vigil outside the little girl's home in the Sydney suburb of Hebersham. Detectives interviewed Kiesha's parents and stepfather last night and her mother Kristi has told News Limited that she had nothing to do with her daughter's disappearance.

Former prime minister Paul Keating has called for tougher privacy laws. Speaking at the University of Melbourne last night, Mr Keating backed an Australian Law Reform Commission proposal for tough sanctions on companies that invaded privacy. He said some media organizations were too driven by gossip and they should meet higher ethical standards.

Thousands of people forced into camps by Pakistan's floods are still waiting to receive food and water. The worst floods in 80 years have affected more than three million people, killed 1,500 and have washed away entire villages. The Pakistani army says its aid operations are reaching stranded victims, but some survivors say the government has abandoned them.

Iranian officials are denying reports that President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has been the target of an assassination attempt. An Iranian website said an explosive device was thrown at the convoy in the western city of Hamedan, but the website later removed that story. Earlier reports have said the president survived the attack and the suspect was arrested at the scene. Officials now say the blast was caused by a firework.

The election campaign has stepped briefly back in time with Kevin Rudd and John Howard duelling over who should lead the country. John Howard launched a stinging attack on Julia Gillard at a Liberal Party fundraiser last night, calling her a total failure. And Mr Rudd said Tony Abbott isn't fair dinkum and he can't sit back and watch him slide into office.

The stepfather of missing six-year-old girl Kiesha Abrahams says police have asked him where he dumped her body. Robert Smith has told The Daily Telegraph that police absolutely think that he's killed her. Kiesha was reported missing on Sunday, but hasn't been seen by anyone outside her immediate family for a month.

Model Naomi Campbell has testified at the war crimes trial of former Liberian president Charles Taylor. Mr Taylor's accused of using blood diamonds to buy weapons for Sierra Leone's rebels. Ms Campbell said she was given some dirty-looking stones in 1997 and was later told they were from the former leader.

The United Nations says Pakistan's worst floods in living memory have affected more than four million people. Torrential rain has drowned parts of the country, with at least 1,600 people confirmed dead and many more still missing.

And US officials have charged 14 people with providing money, personnel and services to the Somali militant group al-Shabab. Prosecutors say they raised the money by telling people the funds would help the poor and needy in Somalia. But the money is said to have gone to al-Shabab which the US and Britain consider to be a terrorist group.

The local share market has closed flat on the back of weakness in financial stocks, with investors cautious ahead of key US jobs data due out tonight. The All Ordinaries edged up just one point and the ASX 200 finished unchanged. The big four banks all closed in the red. But miners Rio Tinto and BHP Billiton managed to reverse their early losses and close higher. Elsewhere, Japan's Nikkei ended 12 points lower. To commodities now, and gold and oil are both on the rise. And the Australian dollar is buying just over 91.5 US cents.

There are strong signs interest rates will stay on hold for longer with Reserve Bank making virtually no changes to its inflation and economic forecasts. The RBA's issued its quarterly statement on monetary policy, and says underlying inflation set to remain within its 2-3 per cent comfort zone until the end of next year, which suggests an extended period of steady interest rates.

And activity in Australia's construction industry suffered another sharp fall in July with a significant slowdown in engineering and commercial building. According to the Australian Industry Group, all sectors were affected by tough market conditions, subdued client demand and intense competition to secure new work.

The latest Newspoll shows that Labor has an election-winning lead of 52 to 48 per cent, that's up from last week's 50-50 result. Today's Galaxy poll also shows the ALP with a narrow lead over the Coalition on a two-party preferred basis.

The Federal Government is promising cash grants for schools that improve their performance. If the Gillard Government's re-elected, high schools will get 100,000 dollars for improvement in school attendance and literacy and numeracy rates. Primary schools will be eligible for 75,000 dollars under that scheme.

The Prime Minister and Opposition leader will take part in a town hall-style debate on Wednesday. Julia Gillard and Tony Abbott will be quizzed by 200 voters at a forum in the western Sydney suburb of Rooty Hill. Mr Abbott has refused the Prime Minister's calls for a second debate on the economy.

Jury notes from the Northern Territory Police files have revealed why Lindy Chamberlain was convicted of murdering her daughter Azaria. News Limited papers say the handwritten notes show that female jurors were tougher on Lindy Chamberlain than the men were. The mother of two was convicted of killing Azaria at Uluru in 1980. She was released six years later when the baby's jacket was found near where Azaria disappeared.

The bodies of 10 aid workers shot dead in Afghanistan have been flown to Kabul. Six Americans, two Afghans, one German and a Briton were among the group. The Taliban says it carried out the attack on the medical convoy. But police believe robbery was the motive.

The battle over broadband is set to take centre stage today with the Federal Coalition due to outline its alternative to the NBN. The Government says the 43-billion-dollar National Broadband Network will be complete by 2018. But the Opposition plans to scrap the network if elected, arguing there is a much more cost-effective way to deliver faster Internet access.

More than 1,000 people have been killed in China's worst flooding in a decade. In northwest China, almost 340 people were killed in a mudslide. Rescuers are desperately searching for more than 1,000 people still missing in Gansu province.

Two people giving evidence at the war crimes trial of Charles Taylor have contradicted evidence by Naomi Campbell about blood diamonds. Actress Mia Farrow and Campbell's former agent Carole White said the model was given diamonds by the ex-Liberian president. Last week Naomi Campbell told The Hague she didn't know who gave her some dirty-looking stones.

The World Trade Organization has ordered Australia to change restrictions on New Zealand apple imports after it found they were illegal. The Federal Government lifted an 85-year ban on imports in 2006, but at the time imposed strict new conditions due to fears of fire blight disease. The WTO said the use of non-tariff barriers breached trade laws.

And a new report claims Australians rank among the world's worst abusers of alcohol. The National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre found almost one in five Australians experienced some period of problematic drinking.

Leading the news this morning:

Labor's hit out at Tony Abbott for failing, they say, to understand his own broadband policy. The Coalition yesterday released a six-billion-dollar plan to extend Internet services through a mix of cable and wireless technology. And it confirmed it would scrap the Government's 43-billion-dollar National Broadband Network if elected. But last night, the Federal Opposition leader Tony Abbott couldn't explain some technical aspects of the plan.

The Prime Minister and Opposition Leader will be quizzed by voters at a forum in western Sydney tonight. The Prime Minister is heading into the event with a two-billion-dollar promise to improve the region's rail services between Parramatta and Epping.

Pakistan's president has returned to his flood-stricken country after a foreign tour that prompted widespread criticism. Many people were angry that Asif Ali Zardari was not at home to oversee the government's response to the disaster.

The number of people killed by a mudslide in western China is now more than 700. More than 1,000 people are still missing four days after heavy rain and mud swept away three villages in Gansu province. Rescuers have been trying to get through metres of mud in the hope of finding some survivors.

And relatives of nine Australians killed in a plane crash in Papua New Guinea will today mark the first anniversary of their deaths. The Australians were among 13 people who died in thick jungle when the plane went down last year. The group was in PNG to walk the Kokoda Track.

Good Morning.

An audience of undecided voters has declared Tony Abbott the winner over Julia Gillard at a public forum in western Sydney last night. The Prime Minister and the Opposition Leader field questions from about 200 voters at the Rooty Hill RSL Club. Julia Gillard was asked a number of questions about the ousting of Kevin Rudd and the general issue of trust, while Mr Abbott was grilled on his broadband plan.

The United Nations has launched an appeal for half a billion dollars to help victims of Pakistan's flood disaster. More than 14 million people have been affected by the floods and more than 1,100 have died.

The official death toll from mudslides in China has risen above 1,100. In western Gansu province, 700 more are missing, buried in debris caused by the mudslides. Ten thousand rescue workers are now searching for survivors.

The first person to be extradited from Indonesia to Australia to face people smuggling charges, has been found guilty by a Perth court. Thirty-five-year-old Hadi Ahmadi was found guilty of helping two boats travel from Indonesia to Christmas Island in 2001. The boats were carrying 550 asylum seekers.

And the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare says the nation is spending an increasing amount to help people with mental health concerns. A report from the Institute shows national spending on mental health services between 2007 to 2008 was nearly six billion dollars. Governments bear 96 per cent of the cost, with private health funds paying the rest.

The local market has snapped a three-day losing streak with both the All Ords and the ASX 200 closing up one and a third per cent. Bargain-hunters stepped into snap up Telstra shares after it slumped to an all-time low of $2.82, helping it recover a little from yesterday's 9.5 per cent decline. As Telstra share price touched record lows today, the telco announced plans to sell its share in the Chinese Internet business SouFun. Two private equity firms have agreed to buy whatever shares Telstra is not able to sell through an initial public offering. They've also agreed to buy the holding for 900 million if the float process isn't completed. Their offer is less than analysts involved in the float had previously flagged, but well above the 280 million Telstra paid for its 51 per cent stake in 2006.

Take a look at the weather now.

There will be showers spread across the southeast from cloud which has been driven by strong winds behind a front. That's also causing Alpine snow. It will be mainly clear elsewhere. A fine day for Queensland apart from a few isolated showers over the far north of Cape York Peninsula.

New South Wales can also expect some showers, scattered above the southern and Central Ranges. Mostly sunny in the northwest and along the coast. It will be a cool day in Victoria with rain in the east, scattered showers over southern and mountain districts and in the northwest.

Rain in Tasmania as well, mainly above the north and the west. That rain will ease during the afternoon and contract to the west, south and Bass Strait Islands by evening.

South Australia can expect isolated showers over the southern agricultural area and strong winds above the southern coasts. Isolated showers above the south coast of Western Australia. They will extend throughout the southwest district and into the far south. It will be fine and sunny in the Northern Territory with light winds and coastal sea breezes.

Looking ahead to Monday. Sydney mostly sunny and windy, 18. A possible afternoon shower in Perth at top of 20. Melbourne a few showers, 13. A shower or two for Adelaide as well on 15. A cool day in Hobart at top of 9 degrees.

The latest Newspoll shows Labor will narrow lead over coalition 52 to 48 on the two party preferred basis. JG is exptected to use the launch today to outline her economy plan and highligh Labor's policies on health and education. The oppostion leader TA will turn his attention back to Sydeny today. He is due to compaign in five marginal electries. Mr. Abbott is * last night when he told those Labor's plan parameter * is holy promise.

United Nation's Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon says the destruction in flood deal with status in Pakistan is heart-wrenching. In United States, eight spectators were killed when the car plunged into them in a  drain desert motorace.  12 others were injured when the car crashed in the crowd and nine race near Los Angeles.

不知道熊猫听力如何，随便给你一点建议：

听写基本上我是没做过。以前做过一两次玩玩，写的太慢了，所以就放弃了。假如你真的想练，其实你可以试着听读，听一段，然后看自己能否复述出来，就可以了。

如果你不是为了强化训练或者考试的话，听写和听读其实都没什么必要，因为基本上你又不是要去写什么detail的东西。日常生活没必要做到字字清楚，更何况很多“虚词”“小词”，不是靠你听出来的，而是根据整个句子的结构和语法意识自己得出来的。新闻一般我是听过去，知道它在讲什么内容，就可以了。因为说真的，你看中国新闻也就这样——偶然会关心个具体的数字，比如舟曲一共被埋了多少人之类的。

练听力可以从自己喜欢的内容练起，很多人喜欢听ABC，BBC，CNN的新闻——说真的，好多人对中东啊，政治啊，巴以冲突之类的都不太了解或者没兴趣，听中文都没啥兴趣，更不要说英文了。新闻在我看来对一般的English Learners来说并不是一个练听力的最好选择——无论从语言和词汇（long，formal）还是文化意识或内容来说，很容易让人丧气并因此坚持不下去。

另外多看看书——好多听力听不懂，是因为you have no background knowledge.而并不是你真的听力不好。

建议你看看BBC的纪录片，有画面有语言，蛮有意思的。语速不快又增加背景知识。

听写基本上我是没做过。以前做过一两次玩玩，写的太慢了，所以就放弃了。假如你真的想练，其实你可以试着听读，听一段，然后看自己能否复述出来，就可以了。

经过一个月听写训练，今天的新闻全听懂了，哈哈。

美剧我在听The big bang theory, The Office, desperate housewives等。

电影。。。想不出对听力有什么提高的电影，说真的。

美国的电影看完，记住的就是些what the motherf***er和Damn it之类的东西。

看新闻比听新闻有意思一点——反正BBC我听过几年，都是那些个调调，听的最后结果就是要睡觉。

我听过Harry Potter的ebook——因为太长了，懒得看，就下下来听听，听过2本，还蛮好玩的，有美音和英音2种，看你自己喜欢。

ABC的澳洲 accent不算很重，总的来说我在Melbourne还没遇到过所谓的重到我听不懂的澳洲口音，无非也就是把ei发成ai的口音，印象蛮深的。觉得爆难听，没次听到aiBC news就浑身鸡毛。。。

BBC有很多纪录片。你说的中国的不知道是啥。看看社科类的，贴近生活又能帮你了解西方社会。去某下载网站（不做广告了）看看，很多。我喜欢的基本上都是讲西方的宗教，历史，旅游，还有科普方面的。

反正对我来说，我对机器不敏感，做着听力会睡着，听着听力也会睡着，没有interaction的东西我都会发困。所以看电视相对我觉得好很多——就是眼睛累死。

我目前喜欢看英国的儿童卡通片，里面说话非常清楚而且标准英音。美国电影我老学粗话了，而且卷舌音好厉害啊，昨天电视节目里面请了个美国帅哥，他说话时候特别注意不要卷舌呢，哈哈。

In other news this morning:

The Federal Government will provide an extra $24 million to support emergency aid in Pakistan. It takes Australia's total commitment to $35 million. The United Nations says up to 3.5 million children in Pakistan are now at risk from deadly waterborne diseases caused by the floods.

Police are resuming their search for six-year-old Kiesha Abrahams in bushland in Sydney's west. Crews will search in the Nurragingy Reserve at Doonside, near where the torso of a woman was found last week. The search is expected to last for several days. Kiesha Abrahams was reported missing more than two weeks ago.

The Thai Government is lifting emergency rule in three provinces three months after deadly anti-government protests. The laws ban public gatherings of more than five people, and they allow authorities to detain suspects for 30 days without charge. Emergency rule will remain in six provinces, including the capital Bangkok. The Government says the decision was made to help business and tourism.

A plane carrying 131 people is broken into three pieces, as it was struck by lightning while trying to land on a Colombian island. One person died and more than 100 were injured. The region's governor says it's a miracle that no one else was killed as the plane approached the runway on San Andres Island.

The American Defense Secretary Robert Gates says the US will definitely begin reducing the number of its soldiers in Afghanistan next July.

A big poll reveals a tiny margin for Labor just three days out from the Federal Election. Labor's apparently clinging to a four-seat majority according to an opinion poll by JWS Research. An automated phone system surveyed almost 22,000 voters across 54 marginal seats. The research shows that if the election had been held last week, Labor would have lost 15 seats and gained six.

Julia Gillard and Tony Abbott have committed to attending a community forum in Brisbane today after three days of debate about the format. The leaders will appear separately at the town hall-style forum at the Broncos Leagues Club. The PM had been pushing for an hour-long economic debate as well as the forum, but that plan collapsed after Mr Abbott insisted on a half-hour debate which he wanted to take place last night.

The Opposition will today release independent costings of its election promises. The Coalition stops submitting policies to Treasury for costing because one set of figures was leaked. Instead, an independent accounting firm has done the costings, but the Coalition won't yet say which firm did the figures.

At least 59 people have been killed in a suicide attack on an army recruitment centre in Baghdad. Authorities say a further 100 people were injured in the bombing in the centre of the Iraqi capital.

And convicted Bali Nine drug smuggler Scott Rush will today launch his final appeal against his death sentence. Rush was held in a maximum security block at Bali's Kerobokan Prison last night and his appeal will go to Denpassar District Court today.

熊猫真是好毅力，天天听写坚持了这么久，佩服啊。
我只是一遍又一遍地听，听了一段ABC感觉对澳音的确适应多了，不过遇上个背景不太熟悉的段子仍然很痛苦，词汇和背景知识明显成了瓶颈。

现在一听记单词就头痛，随它去吧，慢就慢一些。

其实到后来就是一种习惯了，哪天不听下还不舒服了。
听写每天可以学习至少三个短语和单词，一年下来也有千百来个呢。

Today's Newspoll indicates Labor's losing its lead over the Coalition. And it shows support for Labor and the Coalition split 50-50 on a two-party-preferred basis. But the Galaxy Poll tips Julia Gillard will scrape into power, with the number showing Labor has a lead of 52 to 48 per cent.

Australian Democrats candidate Darren Andrews has withdrawn from the campaign after admitting to attempting to procure a child for sex. He was standing for the seat of Sturt in Adelaide. The postmortem  say Mr Andrews lied about not having a criminal record.

The last US combat brigade has left Iraq seven and a half years after the toppling of Saddam Hussein. About 50,000 US soldiers will remain in the country until the end of next year to train local forces and protect US interest there.

A growing number of Americans incorrectly believe that US President Barack Obama is Muslim. A survey of 3,000 Americans found almost 20 per cent thought he was a Muslim, that's up from 11 per cent last year. The poll was taken before Mr Obama defended developers' rights to build a controversial Islamic centre near the site of the September 11 attacks.

And police are appealing for the mother of a baby found dead in Sydney's inner west to come forward. A postmortem will be carried out on the baby girl, whose body was found yesterday in a shoebox behind an apartment in Strathfield. Police believe the infant was discarded on a pathway near the building.

The local share market took its lead from a tumble on Wall Street today and not even a hearty outlook from the RBA deputy governor could pull it up. The All Ords and the ASX 200 closed more than one per cent lower. Billabong shares fell ten per cent after announcing a four and a half per cent fall in full-year profit and issuing a weak outlook. But ANZ put on two per cent, a solid increase in profit overshadowing a warning of slow future growth. And Consolidated Media Holdings added two and a half despite reporting an eight per cent fall in full-year profit. Weakness in the US also weighed on Asian markets. Japan's Nikkei slipped nearly two per cent. And the Australian dollars eased to 89.1 US cents.

ANZ has joined NAB and the Commonwealth Bank in warning that higher funding costs are hurting profit margins. ANZ's reported an underlying profit after tax of 1.3 billion dollars for the June quarter. But chief executive Mike Smith says despite the good result, ANZ faces growing pressure from increased funding costs. Lenders have previously used higher funding costs to justify rate rises outside of any official increases.

And Canadian agribusiness Agrium is a step closer in its bid to take over AWB. Agrium's finished due diligence on the Australian wheat company.

Australia is in uncertain political territory today. Three independent MPs hold the power to decide whether Julia Gillard or Tony Abbott will be given the opportunity to form the next Federal Government. The ABC’s predicting the Coalition will win 73 seats, while Labor will win 72. That’s four short of a majority, with the Greens and independent MPs taking the rest. One seat is still undecided.

An Australian medical crew will leave for Pakistan today to help the aid effort for the country’s floods. Tens of thousands of more people in southern Pakistan are coming under threat from rising waters. Half a million residents in the town of Shahdadkot are fleeing the floodwaters.

Two Australian soldiers seriously wounded in Afghanistan are in a stable condition. The Department of Defence says the soldiers are at Tarin Kowt after an improvised explosive device blew up near their armored vehicle in the Baluchi Valley. They were from the same Brisbane-based regiment as the two Australian soldiers who were killed on patrol on Friday.

An 18-year-old man has died after he and his brothers were shot in Sydney’s west last night. Police say they were shot by a group of masked men during an assault at their Werrington home just after ten o’clock.

Egyptian officials are blaming the theft of a Vincent van Gogh painting on poor security. Investigators say none of the alarms at the Khalil Museum and only seven of the 43 security cameras were working. The 50-million-dollar painting called "Poppy Flowers" was cut from its frame.

And Philippine police have shot dead a former officer who hijacked a bus and killed eight tourists. Seventeen people survived the ordeal, but two were severely injured and six others were taken to hospital. The former policeman seized the bus with an assault rifle to try to get his job back. Negotiations had been going on peacefully before the attacker opened fire.

The three independents who could determine Australia's next government will meet in Canberra today. Rob Oakeshott, Bob Katter and Tony Windsor say they won't make a decision about whether to support Labor or the Coalition until the final results are known. Mr Oakeshott and Mr Windsor are warning they won't be won over by policies and partisan arguments.

A report out today shows Australia's heavy drinking is costing Australia $36 billion a year. The research by the Alcohol Education and Rehabilitation Foundation indicates more than 10 million people experience some negative effect from other people's drinking.

Tens of thousands of people are fleeing their homes in Pakistan as the flooding crisis worsens. River levels are rising in some areas and rescue teams are struggling to reach those in need. Many flood victims are still waiting for food, shelter and clean water.

And Tiger Woods and Elin Nordegren are officially divorced. The golfer and his wife finalized their separation nine months after it was revealed Woods had been cheating.

Frontline negotiations about our nation's political future begin in Canberra this morning. The three independents will hold their first face-to-face meeting to Tony Abbott and Julia Gillard about forming a minority government. Tony Abbott’s ready to woo the cross-benchers with a plan to introduce a backbench-only Question Time.

A plane has crashed in northeast China, killing 42 people. The plane carrying 96 passengers burst into flames as it came in to land at the Yichun city airport. At least 40 people were rescued and taken to hospital according to state media.

Militants in Somalia have stormed a hotel, killing at least 32 people, including six members of Parliament. Several men disguised as government soldiers approached hotel guards and then opened fire. One gunman then blew himself up inside the building. The Islamist militant group al-Shabaab has claimed responsibility for that attack.

Authorities in the Philippines have admitted they bungled the Manila bus hijacking, which left eight Hong Kong tourists dead. Police say the assault team was inadequately trained and the operation was badly planned. Police shot the hijacker after negotiations broke down.

And a major road in inner Sydney could remain closed for days because of a burst water main. The large pipe burst last night just before 6:00 am, closing Moore Park and Oatley Roads in the city's east. Drivers are expected to experience major delays this morning.

The independent MPs who’ll decide Australia's government have criticized the Coalition for its refusal to let Treasury cost its policies. Bob Katter, Rob Oakeshott and Tony Windsor want information about the budget impact of both parties’ policies.

Australian aid is being distributed at a camp for flood survivors funded by a banned Pakistani terrorist organization. Jamaat-ud-Dawa was linked to the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks, and has been blacklisted by the US, Pakistan and the United Nations. Several Australian Defence Force commandos could be charged over the deaths of five children during a raid in Afghanistan. Fairfax Media reports the Director of Military Prosecutions is preparing to lay charges in connection with the incident. A teenager, two young children and two babies were killed during a mission in February last year.

And reports from Jakarta say the Indonesian government will seek 2.5 billion dollars' compensation from an Australian-based company responsible for an oil spill. The Montara well leaked into the Timor Sea for more than 70 days last year, destroying fish stocks in Indonesian territory.

The US government has slashed second quarter growth signaling a more pronounced slowdown in the recovery from recession. Gross domestic product expanded at an annual rate of 1.6 per cent instead of the 2.4 per cent estimated by the Commerce Department last month. The government said that was mainly due to its massive trade deficit and weak private inventory investment.

US Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke says the figures show economic recovery in America has softened more than expected and the Fed is ready to take further steps if needed to stimulate growth. He said those steps could be unconventional if the US economic outlook deteriorates significantly.

And to the numbers, Wall Street finished in the black as investor shooks off a revenue warning from technology company Intel, and that downbeat assessment from Ben Bernanke. The Dow Jones, the S&P 500 and the NASDAQ all put on about 1.6 per cent. Across the Atlantic, British stocks ended two straight weeks of losses lifted by Telecoms. And Australian stocks finished the week higher after a cautious day's trade. The All Ords added 15 points and the ASX 200 put on 14.

Australia faces another week in political limbo as negotiations to end post-election power stalemate enter a second week. Four independents return to Canberra today to resume talks with major parties about who will form a minority government. And Labor's preparing to reveal its plan for parliamentary reform as demanded by independents Tony Windsor, Rob Oakeshott and Bob Katter.

New South Wales police will today try to confirm whether skeletal remains found in the Belanglo State Forest are human. A group of trail bike riders discovered the bones on Sunday and called police. The serial killer Ivan Milat dumped seven bodies in the forest in the 1990s.

Former David Jones' chief Mark Mclnnes is back in court today, fighting Australia's biggest-ever sexual harassment claim. Former DJ's publicist Kristy Fraser-Kirk is claiming $37 million in damages, alleging Mr Mclnnes acted inappropriately at work functions earlier this year. She's also suing the company, saying complaints to supervisors were not taken seriously. David Jones and Mr Mclnnes denied the allegations.

One of Australia's biggest crime investigations has uncovered an international drug syndicate linked to bikie gangs, Chinese triads and corrupt Australian officials. A report by The Age and the ABC's Four Corners reveals the Australian Crime Commission has been leading the Hoffman investigation for the past two years.

And police investigating a riot at the Darwin immigration detention centre will study CCTV footage to see if charges will be laid.

Julia Gillard's hopes of forming the next government have been dealt a serious blow. A recalculation of the two-party preferred vote shows the Coalition now more than 1,900 votes ahead of Labor. The Prime Minister had previously said the party with the higher count should be allowed to form governments.

The Prime Minister and the Opposition leader today will continue wooing the four independents who hold the balance of power in the Lower House. Hobart-based independent Andrew Wilkie says he could make a decision on who he'll support in government as early as today.

The former girlfriend of Pakistani fast bowler, Mohammad Asif, says the player told her about match-fixing deals he made in Australia last summer. The actress Veena Malik says Asif admitted Pakistan would not win a match in 2010. Asif is one of four Pakistani players questioned by police in London as part of a match-fixing investigation.

A group of the world's leading scientists has found the UN's climate body in need of fundamental reforms. Their report recommends changes to the way the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change is run and the way science is presented. The IPCC has faced increasing pressure since its 2007 climate assessment wrongly predicted that Himalayan glaciers could disappear by 2035.

And in Slovakia, at least six people were killed and 14 injured when a man went on a morning rampage with an assault rifle. The shooting happened in a housing estate in the capital Bratislava. At least six of the dead were members of the same family.

Three Australians and a New Zealander were killed when their charter plane burst into flames in Papua New Guinea. The Trans Air plane overshot the runway on Misima Island and crashed into trees. One of the men killed was a 61-year-old marine pilot from Sydney. Consular officials in Port Moresby and Canberra are working with authorities to contact the families of those on board.

The chief executive of the Hawthorn Football Club says the sport’s drugs policy has failed. One of the club's players Travis Tuck is the first player to be suspended under the AFL's three strikes policy. Stuart Fox says the club was completely unaware of Tuck's drug taking and couldn't provide him with a support network. Tuck will miss 12 AFL matches and will have to pay a 5,000-dollar fine.

Four Israelis have been killed near a Jewish settlement in the West Bank in what police are describing as a terrorist attack. They were shot just two days before new peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians begin in Washington. Israeli police say a car came under attack near the settlement of Kyriat Arba near Hebron. Islamist Hamas militants in the Gaza Strip issued a statement on Tuesday claiming responsibility, calling it a heroic operation.

Iraq's prime minister says his country is independent as the US formally ends combat operations seven years after they began. Nouri al-Maliki says the country's security forces will now deal with all threats, domestic or external. While many Iraqis have welcomed the withdrawal, some say they believe it's happening too soon.

Israel  has hinted at a compromise with the Palestinians as direct talks between Middle East leaders begin in Washington. Israel's defence minister said the Jewish state would be willing to hand over parts of Jerusalem to the Palestinians. The US President Barack Obama is hosting those talks between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas. Mr Obama says acts of violence in the meantime will not derail these talks.

Police in the United States have shot dead a man who was holding several hostages in the state of Maryland. The man took at least three hostages inside the headquarters of the Discovery Channel. Police say the man entered the building with a handgun, and was believed to have an explosive device strapped to his chest. All the hostages are now safe.

The sole survivor of a plane crash in Papua New Guinea is being treated in a north Queensland hospital. The New Zealand man was flown to Townsville on a plane chartered by Careflight New South Wales. Four men died when that Trans Air jet crashed at the end of a runway on Misima Island yesterday. The Australian Transport Safety Bureau is investigating the cause of the crash.

The New South Wales Premier Kristina Keneally is in damage control this morning after the resignation of a fourth minister in less than a year. The Ports and Waterways Minister Paul McLeay resigned yesterday after accessing pornographic and gambling websites on his work computer. He was caught out by a new internet filter in state parliament and a small number of other parliamentary internet users may require further investigation as well.

Independent MP Andrew Wilkie has described the Coalition's billion-dollar offer for Hobart hospital as reckless. Mr Wilkie yesterday announced that he'd support Prime Minister Julia Gillard's attempt to form government. And it means Labor is now just two seats away from forming government.

The Prime Minister has come under attack from the clubs industry for not consulting them properly over plans to put betting limits on poker machines. Ms Gillard won Andrew Wilkie's support yesterday on the condition she would implement new gambling prevention measures. Clubs Australia says the loss of revenue and the cost of installing the new system hasn't been researched.

The United States envoy to the Middle East has described direct peace talks between the Israeli and Palestinian leaders as productive. George Mitchell says the meetings with Benjamin Netanyahu and Mahmoud Abbas reflect good faith and the seriousness of the purpose. The two have agreed to direct talks every two weeks.

The British Foreign Secretary William Hague has received the full support of his Prime Minister, following speculation about his private life. Mr Hague said he should have realized there might have been speculation about he and the male aide occasionally sharing a hotel room during the election campaign. Mr Hague declared rumors over improper relationships as utterly false.

An explosion has ripped through an oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico. The rig is on fire and the two-kilometre-long oil sheen has spread from the site. The explosion threw 13 people into the water, but all have been rescued.
