My friends often show concern about being obsolete when I tell them tostay with Windows XP and skip Windows Vista entirely. Little do theyknow, a lot of people are still actually using Windows 3.x. And forthose, I have some bad news.

真是奢侈！扫雷也要一台专用机。恩，还应该有一台DOS专用机，计算器专用机，写字板专用机，画图专用机。。。。。。

我的投票和微软的新版本发布一致：

桌面 Windows 7 > Vista > XP > 98 > 95 > 3.x

服务器 2008 > 2003 > 2000 > NT > Workgroup 3.11

is there any adequate reason we should transform os from XP to Vista? i have hardly used vista system which only consumes more resourses without any practically useful features to common user in my mind.

does any person have different thinking about that, i'd like to learn.

i consider that 98 is better than win ME.

98 is better than ME: 98 and ME actually developed based on the same core program. ME provides a supposed to be a better looking, more user-friendly interface. however, it didn't. Also those changes in ME requires a lot more resource.

However, you can't really compare XP to Vista, it would be so unfair to Vista. Windows 7 which will be released later next year should be the one to make the comparison with Vista. I look forward the release of Windows 7. Windows 7 is developed base on the same core program of Vista.

The down draw of Vista is not only Microsoft gave Vista a new core program, which is good, but MS also changed a lot in the interface, they have tried too many new things, like experiment which make the system looks bad. Vista should be considered a the first version of the next generation of windows. Windows 7 will be a big success.

XP is using the same core of Windows 2000.
Vista, Windows Server 2008 and Windows 7 use the same core program.

In term of impact? Nt4 opened the door to server market for Microsoft; 2000 was a good try but many customers stayed with NT4 until 2003 comes out. 2003 anchored Microsoft in the low to medium end of server market. That's why although 2000 introduced a suite of new technology (most notably AD), I consider its impact smaller than that of NT4 & 2003.

98 & ME are near identical, however ME is cleaner...95/98 are full of inconsistencies due to its half breed nature.

RIP win 3.x
Since we are on the topic of win4wg, I have to say we still have servers running OS/2 Warp. In case no one remember what it is. It's the IBM sibling of win4wg. Such a good OS for it's time. Unfortunately it was no match for the mighty marketing machine of MS.
