2nd Jan 2010, Saturday, Sunny and Hot, Min 23oC Max 31oC – Powerhouse Museum
We arrived in Sydney at 9:30AM, the Carnarvon Lodge’s boss Anthony picked us up at the Kingsfort airport. He also showed us around the lodge which is in Kirribilli. One of the lodge’s merits is it’s near the Milsons Point Station and the Luna Park Wharf, it’s very convenient to go wherever you want by train or ferry. We visited Kirribilli House in the morning.
Also it’s the first Saturday of the month, the Power House Museum is free today for kids. We went to the Powerhouse Museum in the afternoon, the tickets for the adults is $10. It looks much like the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum.
Route: Milsons Point Station <-> Central Station
Tips: We bought the weekly Red TravelPass at a 7-11 which is $38 for adults and $19 for kids. A TravelPass gets you around suburban Sydney using a combination of train, bus and ferry services. The pass allows unlimited trips within the special zones on a weekly, quarterly or annual basis.
Go get the brochures at the railway stations and travel with it, it’s helpful.

3rd Jan 2010, Sunday, Drizzle and Cool, Min 18oC Max 21oC – Wollongong
Today’s Sunday, we went to Wollongong (82 km away from Central). The name Wollongong is believed to mean “the sound of the sea”, we like to name it “卧龙岗” though. Have you heard the sound of the sea?
Outtakes: On the beach, my son was trying his best to throw the sand back to the sea, a man saw that and was kidding with my son by throwing the sand at my son. It was funny.
Outtakes: When we were on the Wollongong City Beach, my son said “Mum, the westerners will say hi to you even if they don’t know you.” I said “That’s right, what did you say when they said hi to you?” He answered “I said hello.”
Route: Milsons Point Station -> Central Station (transfer to the platform 14) -> the train to Wollongong
Wollongong -> Central Station (transfer to the platform 14) -> Milsons Point Station
Outtakes: At the Central Station, we were asking help from an old lady about where to take the train to Wollongong, for some reasons (I haven’t figured out what the reasons were though…), I couldn’t understand what she was saying. She then waved to my son “Hey kid.” She thought my son would understand her. I explained “No, he won’t understand, we are from China…” Before I finished explaining, I saw the lady was nodding and giving a thumb up to my son since my son understood we had to transfer to the platform 14 to take the right train.
I’m reluctant but have to confess: my son outsmarts me. What I’m more reluctant to confess is: the old lady outsmarts me too.
(Actually I’m very happy and proud, you know that. LOL.)
Outtakes: When we were back from Wollongong to the Central Station, we didn’t notice from which platform we were to the platform 14, I asked a crew “Which platform should we go to take the train to the Milsons Point Station?” He answered “16.” and continued, “Chinese?” I nodded “Yep.” He said in Mandarin “十六”. Again, my son understood his lame Mandarin before I did.
Tips: We bought the Family Funday Sunday tickets at the Milsons Point Station, its only $2.5 per person! Since it’s a Family Funday Sunday, the travelling group must be related and include at least one child and one adult and fares can only be purchased on Sunday of travel only.

4th Jan 2010, Monday, Drizzle, Min 18oC Max 24oC – Taronga Zoo
Took my son to Taronga Zoo today, watched the fantastic Seal Show at 1PM, we missed the chance of taking photos with the koalas since the tickets were sold out, so we went to KidZoo at Backyard to Bush after the Spider Keeper Talk at 3PM. Bought a red kangaroo toy which was made in China.
Route: Milsons Point Wharf <-> Circular Quay Ferry Terminal Wharf 5 <-> Circular Quay Ferry Terminal Wharf 2 <-> Taronga Zoo Wharf
5th Jan 2010, Tuesday, Cloudy, Min 19oC Max 27oC – Bondi Beach
I went to the CommonWealth bank in the morning to take my bank card. Martin Place is like Shanghai's Nanjing Road, there is a Martin Place Station, CommonWealth bank is very near to the Station.
Then we travelled to Bondi Beach in the afternoon. My son had a great time at Bondi Beach, see how excited he was.
Outtakes: My son high-fived with a big boy at the Milsons Point Station.
Outtakes: Instead of taking bus, we walked back from Bondi Beach to the Bondi Junction Station. We couldn’t make it without help of my son, his sense of direction is excellent.
Route: Milsons Point Station <-> Town Hall Station (transfer to platform 5) <-> Bondi Junction Station (transfer to platform 3) <-> Bus 333 or 380 or 381 or 382
6th Jan 2010, Wednesday, Thunderstorm, Min 21oC Max 28oC – Queen Victoria Building, Hyde Park, the Rocks
We took the city rail from the Milsons Point Station to the Town Hall Station, I planned to walk from Queen Victoria Building through Hyde Park, Royal Botanic Gardens to Mrs Macquarie’s Chair and Opera House and then walk through the Harbor Bridge back to the lodge. But my boys were just too lazy, so we visited Queen Victoria Building and Hyde Park only then took the train back to the lodge at St James Station.
Outtakes: I answered a survey from a red-cross volunteer. She asked me where I was from, I said Shanghai. She was glad to meet me since she had been to Shanghai. “Shanghai is a crazy city.” She said. She then showed me where the Queen Victoria Building was.
Route: St James Station -> Circular Quay Station -> Wynyard Station (transfer to platform 4) -> Milsons Point Station.
There was a huge Christmas tree in the Queen Victoria Building. It was very nice, wasn’t it?
We saw a man at the Hyde Park who was feeding birds, I think the birds love him very much.
After a good rest in the afternoon, we took a walk after the dinner, walking through the Harbor Bridge we reached the Rocks, bought some souvenirs there. Then we took the train back to the lodge at the Circular Quay Station.
Route: Circular Quay Station -> Wynyard Station (transfer to platform 4) -> Milsons Point Station.
7th Jan 2010, Thursday, Showers, Min 21oC Max 24oC - Royal Botanic Garden, Mrs Macquarie Point, Luna Park
The birds outside the window get up every early in the morning and are twittering happily.
My husband: Are they laughing or crying?
Me: Idiot, they are courtshipping.
My son: What’s courtship?
Me: It’s to find a girlfriend…
What impressed me most in the Royal Botanic Garden were the huge scary bats (or so-called flying-foxes) hanging upside down in the trees.
Walking in the garden, we arrived at the Ms Macquarie Point, the best location you can take pictures with both the Opera House and the Harbor Bridge.
Took my son to the Luna Park in the afternoon – the paradise of the kids, it’s like Shanghai’s Jinjiang Park or Tropical Storm. My son liked the park so much that we took him there again the next day.
Outtakes: I saw a guy who was wearing a T-shirt with “Kangaroo Poo” on it. LOL.
Tips: The price of the tickets with which you can ride anything is $45, and it’s only $30 on Friday, that’s why we took him again the next day (Friday).

We went to enroll medicare in the morning bought fish oil and sheep kin at Chatswood Westfield shopping mall. Visited Luna Park again in the afternoon.
Route: Milsons Point Station <-> Chatswood Station <-> Westfield shopping mall, level 5.
Tips: I’ve asked the staff of medicare, you can enroll medicare in one city but use it in another city, so you can enroll it even if you haven’t decided which city you are going to.
Tips: There is an ALDI food store, the price of the food there is much better than other stores.
9th Jan 2010, Saturday, Sunny, Min 21oC Max 29oC – Paddy’s Market, Sydney Festival
Applied Tax File Number in the morning.
Tips: http://www.ato.gov.au/individuals/default.asp?menu=1103
Get a tax file number or update your details>non-residents, migrants and visitors>Migrants & visitors – apply online>Apply for a tax file number
Went to Paddy’s Market and bought some gifts for the kids. You can buy gifts, souvenirs etc there, the prices are good.
Went to the Martin Place for the Sydney Festival, there were many activities. People were crazy and the live music was too noise, my son wasn’t interested in the activities, so we went back to the lodge soon.
10th Jan 2010, Sunday, Late shower, Min 22oC Max 29oC – Coming back
Took a picture of the family room we lived in Carnarvon’s lodge with the kids’ gifts.
Outtakes: See the flowers? I bought them for 3 bucks, my husband scolded me since we were living there for only 8 nights. But I just like to decorate the place I live, it makes me feel at home.
Bought Australian opal and pearl necklaces at the airport, lovely huh?
Tips: You can book a taxi to take you to the international airport in advance, the phone number of Premier Cabs is: 131017, you can book a Station Wagon if you have lot of baggage.
It was a memorable travel.
