I write to you as an Australian who loves this country, its people and is willing to protect the freedom, the quality of life and culture that this great country represents. Our young country is made unique and beautiful by embracing various cultures, ethnicity and values from different parts of the world. Our way has taught many other countries that love and tolerance can triumph over hatred and violence. This is something that makes me proud to call this country home and makes me want to contribute in whatever way I can to make this country greater.
However, I am deeply disappointed and dismayed by the recent video made by Nick Folkes, Chairman of Australian Protectionist Party (APP) which proposed a rally event against Chinese investors. His campaign is misleading and manipulative and it preys on people’s emotions for personal gain. He claims to protest against Chinese investors who are pushing up Australian real estate prices but does not provide factual proof to back up his claim that the price increases are driven solely by Chinese buyers. According to the report below:
http://www.propertyobserver.com. ... -firb-spenders.html
The top three investors in the Australian real estate market are Chinese, American and Canadian with the American and Canadian investors following very closely with a combined investment value exceeding the investment made by the Chinese. However, there is no mentioning of these findings in his campaign. If his campaign is truly justified by concerns about real estate prices in Sydney, he would have delivered the whole picture and not just be selective in what he presents. There are no research findings to suggest that the prohibition of just the Chinese buyers would be sufficient to curb skyrocketing house prices in Sydney, yet Mr Folkes organised his movement to target only the Chinese. I question if this campaign is truly aimed at changing the Sydney real estate prices or if this is just a hate campaign disguised as a patriotic movement.
I am wholeheartedly against foreign nationals investing in our real estate and pushing our next generation out of what they deserve. However, the Chinese buyers are not the source of the problem and more importantly, they are not here uninvited. The Australian house price is the outcome of multiple parties working together for a common gain. It can be fixed by putting a hold on all foreign investment in the Australian real estate industry and by reviewing the negative gearing policy. This is an agenda item that needs to be brought up with the Australian government who are responsible for looking after the welfare of the Australian people. As such, if he does intend to make a difference to the house price situation, Mr Folkes’s campaign should be targeted against the Australian government and the real estate industry simply because only they have the power to introduce the change. By ignoring this common knowledge and fact, it shows that Mr Folkes’s true intent is not to show concern about the state of the real estate industry and prices or our next generation but rather to induce hatred of a single ethnicity.
What is more offensive is the poster that he chose to use as part of his demonstration (please see below). The poster originated from World War Two, at the height of the military tension between Imperial Japan and Australia. It portrays the Japanese Imperial Army who tortured Australian POWs and bombed Darwin, and sends the rhetoric that the Japanese were on its way to crush Australia. How can this same image be used to portray Chinese investors who are invited by our government to invest. They have not murdered nor have they behaved unjustly to Australia. How can he relate the Chinese to the Japanese Imperial Army when the Chinese themselves were fighting vigorously on the same side as Australia and had lost tens of millions of soldiers and citizens to the Japanese invasion? Such comparison is barbaric and insensitive, yet it is intentionally done to manipulate and prey on people’s fears. This action is aimed to cause division and misunderstanding within our multicultural and harmonious society that so many people have strived to establish. This proposed rally is done for Mr Folkes’s personal gain and cause. He has published his bank accounts for donation on the campaign page and he is also known to associate with people who hold White Supremacy views. It is evident that his campaign is based on no supporting research and selective information. The fact that the APP website has an article with the headlines “Multiculturalism — celebrating the biggest mass murderer in history” shows that multiculturalism is something that these APP members hate and disagree with and prompting hatred is something that adds to their cause.
I request for Mr Folkes to publicly apologise for his hate campaign and for unjustly labelling the Chinese as the enemy of the Australian family. Mr Folkes should also publicly apologise for the poster he used in his protest campaign as it is misleading and deeply offensive to the Australian Chinese Community. It is also an embarrassing representation of the Australian people to the international arena as it shows a lack of knowledge and education in history. In addition, I would like to request for Mr Folkes to burn or dispose of all his offensive posters, so that they will not be further used or distributed to cause division within our community.
If nothing is done, many innocent and misinformed Australians may fall for Mr Folkes’s agenda and the Chinese Australian community who call Australia home will become victims of racial vilification and harassment. Such events will only place our community’s safety in danger, and further burden our police forces and court systems when they can be better utilised to bring justice in much needed areas. The recent atmosphere in racial tensions has been fuelled by those who are ignorant and who do not believe in racial harmony. We do not need these people to create new tensions where there are none.
Thank you for taking the time to read my letter. I look forward to hearing your response.
